Oil Filter examination - lets see yours
My new 2024 2500 Rebel had alot of tick...lifter tick, All my hemis have ticked at startup that went away in short time, but this one is very different...Tick was remaining longer and louder after starting the truck and wasn't completely going away. It had been to dealer for the first two oil changes at around 6000, I now wish I would have changed the oil a little sooner. For the third oil change I used some M1 FS I had in the garage ( 0-40 ), after that change and around 2000 miles it was ticking loud enough that I didn't want to drive it until I had the dealer inspect it. I took it down to the dealer and left it overnight so they could hear the cold start-up with me present....they both heard the loud ticking. I was there to cut open the filter and get an oil sample, but the tech said he would return the filter and grab my sample for me, I said okay fine. They ended up writing it up as "we started another vehicle with the same year motor and it sounded the same" ...ahhh okay thanks guys ! needless to say Im not really happy with their diagnoses.
I cut that filter open the following day and found some small metal galling in the filter, not much but they were there. It would take about 3-5 min to find a piece of metal with an eye loop. So I'm keeping that filter but I am unsure if this is normal or not. Truck has a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty.
Okay why am I cutting open the oil filter??, well my other truck is a 2014 Ram 2500 tradesman and last year all of a sudden I had what sounded like a collapsed lifter, it just came on suddenly. I ended up taking it to the dealer for diagnoses, they found metal in the VVT solenoid, and I decided to replace the long block. $12000 later i basically have PTSD form this event so I originally ordered the oil filter analysis kit from Blackstone for this 2014 Ram. Well I did the first oil change on the 2014 a few weeks ago and cut the filter open and left it on the bench to drain. This morning i picked it up to cut the filter media off. It was then I already noticed metal flakes on the paper towel I had it sitting on. I cut it open and took it inside put it on the kitchen table on some new thick paper towels and stretched it out. Holy crap this thing is loaded with metal flake at only 1814 miles !
Okay hence why I am initiating this thread...i would like to see what is "Normal" from Ram HD 6.4 owners. I will put up pictures of my 2014 filter ...let me know if you think this is "Normal" and cut your filters open lets see what you have.
The pictures below unfortunately do not show the entire filter but just about every pleat has metal in it.

For reference I used an oil filter cutter I bought off amazon for around $20 that utilizes a cutting wheel similar to a pipe cutter or kitchen can opener.
( I tried uploading the video ... it was a no-go )
