No power/surge on initial take off

Twice now I have experienced a strange power issue after the truck has been started. It is when the truck is cold, and doesn't have time to warm up (last night was around 5 degrees.) I started the truck, put it in gear and stepped on the gas, nothing happened. I let off the pedal, pressed down again and it lurched, then engaged. the RPM's weren't going up, so I'm not thinking it was a transmission thing, it felt more engine/fuel related.

anyone have anything like this happen before?

If it's a diesel engine, it may have a cold engine protection built in that gives the turbo time to get proper lubrication before allowing power to be applied.
