New to the fourm and in the market for a 4th gen Ram diesel. Need some direction on what to upgrade/change to make the truck bullet proof for long road trips and around town. Fuel pump, emissions, etc..

Thanks in advance!

I definitely agree, I'm looking to buy new though. The research I've done so far on the 2020's still have potential issues that can be corrected before it fails on the road.

Smart to hold out for 2021. Look for the new pump. I got a dealer here trying to get new price for a exteme low mile 2019(demo style miles) but get all kinds of stories as to why they have it. I suspect a dealer buyback for many problems. I could be wrong but their price is stupid high as well.

Yeah, a new 2019 for full price when it's about to be two years old in a few days is pretty silly. Supposedly the 21's are projected to have issues due to the known problematic components used still. I hope that's not the case though.

I'm curious what known problematic components are still being used in the 21's?
I do know about the CP4 and that apparently has been changed, but curious what else is out there.

Thanks!

Now, as to upgrades to make it bulletproof?

My last 3 trucks have been RAM HD; a 2014 3500, a 2016 2500, and now a 2020 3500. I tow heavy about 30% of the time, and I never want a vehicle that I am not confident in driving across the country tomorrow. My experience is that I buy them, I drive them, I do maintenance when it's needed and they've all been bulletproof.
I have had a few small issues and the 2014 was definitely the worst for that (was early on to some big changes then). But, none of the issues have stranded me; I hope that continues.

The CP4 was the main issue I was looking out for. Not that common but when it happens it does a lot of damage.

BTW, I just noticed this was posted in the 4th gen forum. You might want to check the 4.5 gen forum for info on 2021's.

If you're going to wait, why not just order one exactly the way you want it?
Because any special order truck is going to be top dollar. I can find something close enough on the lot somewhere. Probably have to road trip it though

Check out the pricing thread, ordered trucks aren't paying top dollar. Now if you were shopping for a 2020, it's true you could get a much better deal off a lot, especially because of the CP4 change. With ordering you have the advantage of being able to price out the exact same truck at every dealership within your desired driving radius. That and you're not paying for things you don't otherwise want or spending way than what you could have ordered it for trying to retrofit options that you wish it had. But if you can find one that you like on a lot, it is a lot better than waiting on an order.

I definitely agree with the options. I just feel like if you price everything out with the options the price is the price on the calculator. I could certainly be wrong, I just feel like you as the buyer have more of an advantage in negotiating if it's already on the lot. Truck is already assembled and there, someone has to buy it or lower the price until it's sold.

Maybe not so much components, but quality issues: leaky third brake lights, sunroofs, hoods filling with water, unknown clunks, loose fuses, etc.. Time will tell.

It costs the dealer much less to sell an order than to carry inventory. The best deals typically only come on model year close outs. Might as well order exactly what you want if you can't find one on a lot. With the Diesel there's also that "thing" that has been changed for the 2021 trucks.
