Hello Ram-ily,

I am new. I am a long time Toyota Enjoyer (and a big Believer) but I was recently swayed.

While I appreciate the stout, rugged, reliability of a Tundra like my wife's cooking and incredible housework, I found myself wanting more. The Power Wagon was staring at me - dropping a pencil in the hallway, lustfully staring at me. Like any good man, I quickly raced home and went to the internet. Immediately. I would never buy a RAM Truck. Ever. The decals, the badging, the RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM EVERYWHERE :)

But like most bad girls with a hot top and ***** stamp... I found out that as soon as I was inside her... I could not stop... and so...

I bought a 2022 Power Wagon today with 20k miles on it and I was scared that it was ticking :(

So I want to know if I hear "ticking" outside the cabin - but NOT inside the cabin. Is this nothing to worry about?

It also drives great!!

Oil looked clean AF - previous owner got 5 oil changes in 20k miles?

I recently bought a 2023 PowerWagon and came from 2+ decades of being a GM truck guy. My guess is your truck is fine. These hemis do make quite a bit of clatter on startup and when cold. I've had to adjust my ears from "GM noise" to "Ram noise". My wife's 02 C5 Vette sounds like a sewing machine, but its normal for those LS engines.

Be careful of falling down the rabbit hole of the 'hemi tick' curse unless your truck has a lot of miles on it. You can also get a loud tick from a leaking exhaust header too if its higher mileage. However, I'm guessing your 2022 is too young for either of those to be a concern.

If you are worried, you could always send a sample of your oil to Blackstone labs and see if it comes back with anything excessive (like extra metal) in it.

is the tick only on cold startup? Does it go away at any point or is it persistent?

the 6.4 sounds like a ticking time bomb but every single new one I have heard sounds the same. I have had people tell me theirs don't tick but when I hear them in person they tick just like all the rest.

You guys are the best :)

Thank you!

I DID NOT KNOW THE MANUAL HAD DIFFERENT OIL TO CHOOSE FROM

Is that for all 6.4L hemi? We can use any of those oils?

No 0w40 for the 6.4

When I lived in Kali by the beach, I coukdnt find 0W40 so I used 5W40 Castrol. No issues at 40K miles.
Now that I'm in the mountains of Nevada and get snow, I'm going to have to find 0W40 I guess.

Funny, really, I remember that my 2010 1500 Hemi specifically needed 5W20, which sometimes was hard to come by. If you used 5W30, it was too viscous and disabled the MDS.
Seems like times have changed since then...

you should hear the 7.3 in my work truck, it has done it since they bought it at work. Ford even calls it a cackle and it is obnoxious as heck especially if we have it loaded. My charger has had the "tick" for over 150,000 miles and she still goes. from my experience the tick is not an indicator of impeding doom those with lifter failure just seem to occur at random. there are suggestions such a oil etc to keep it mitigated but I am not sure how many of those hold true. I change oil every 5K and keep going. The life of my 392 in my charger is the reason I went with the motor in my truck now.

Don’t pay much attention to my pic when it comes to oil weights. I posted that screenshot just to show dodge explains the Hemi tick in the owners manual.
