Never had big diesel. Thinking of letting go of my 2016 RAM 2500 diesel because I pull a 36 foot fifth wheel camper. However, I can't stand the thought of driving a 3500 long bed dually to the store and around town. If I go single rear wheel am I going to feel much of an improvement over the 2500? Also I'm reading the newer (19+) 68 trannies aren't as problematic as they were, is this true if I can't find a Aisin? Jump on a good deal or wait until new trannies come out which puts me hauling with my 2500 for a few more years? Thanks

I have no problem driving or parking around just have to park at the end of the parking lot..lol

Few months ago I was in this same boat. I tow a 39' 14K fifth wheel. I had a 2018 2500 that was deleted. I was over on payload and just under the RAWR.

The 2500 handled the trailer ok, but I was getting pushed around and the rear would feel squirrely at times especially in winds and speeds over 60. I was considering a dually, however my truck is a DD and like you I didn't like the thought of daily driving a DRW. I probably have the fifth wheel hooked up 15% of the time.

So I decided on a 3500 SRW. It was a big improvement. Not sure if it's the leafs or the longer wheel base, but it definitely feels more stable towing and the overall ride has improved. Towing aside the 2021 is much more refined than the 2018. It is quiet and smooth. My 18 was deleted with a tow tune and transmission tuning and this new truck drives similar IMO, but is much more smoother.

As far as it being a long bed it's taken a little bit getting used to, but not too bad and now having the extra space and capability I wouldn't do a short bed again. That aside I am thankful I stuck with the SRW. The length is enough and the DRW would have been more hassle than it's worth for my use.

A SRW will certainly get it done, but DRW is a game changer when in tow. Simply nothing like it. One hand on the wheel towing experience at all times. The difference is unreal. I came from a 2016 2500 cummins and am completely shocked how easy the new DRW moves my 35' 14k toybox around.

I could DD my truck for a year straight with no issue. It has the OEM rear air assist so the truck rides very nice for a DRW.

Get the 3500, SRW or DRW. The extra capability is nice to have and my SRW cc short bed 3500 SO Cummins tows my trailer (up to 14,500k lbs) effortlessly.

I configured mine the way I did when ordering lots of tongue weight depending on how I'm loaded (payload capacity of the 3500 needed) and needed as short and small a truck as possible with some of the places I get into.
