Hello,
Just bought a used (certified preowned) 2020 RAM CC SB w/cummins. Will be towing a 5500 gross travel trailer. Overkill I know, but tired of making due with a half ton. Lots of good info here and thanks for that. Got a cap for the fuel fill. Will be installing a 50 gallon tank for next year when we travel up through Canada to the Arctic Ocean and up the Canol and Nahanni range and other remote roads. Goals for the truck are maximum reliability and range.

Thanks,
Guy

Welcome aboard, that sounds like a dream trip. There is a larger safety factor with towing with a HD truck as well. Emergency stops with a 1500 are a non event with a HD truck.

Welcome. Enjoy the truck. The Cummins is worth it over the hemi imo, I don’t have much more towing needs than you, but it’s the best diesel I’ve had over power stroke and Duracrap.

Well I feel a lot better about the DPF and DEF systems on the engine than I did going in. Seems they hold up well with a minimum of load on the engine. My nightmare was being 150 miles up a remote one lane gravel road and having the DPF fill up with no way to "drive at highway speeds". As long as pulling a trailer at 20-30 mph on backroads provides adequate load I will be OK.

That is a great point. I have had some puckering moments stopping the trailer with the 1/2 ton. My father took us on some of these roads 50 years ago when I was a kid and I have always wanted to go back, especially now that the roads extend all the way to the Arctic ocean.

It will regen sitting in traffic on the highway. It may take longer but it will do it. Best bet is to figure out when your truck will be doing one (24hr cycle) and just be cognizant of it and try to let it complete.

That is great to know and it is something I will be watching. I will also be carrying extra DEF so in case the tank or lines were to leak I could repair and refill without being stuck in limp mode.

Yea youll be fine with the DEF once you learn your trucks habits. Mine came with half a tank of DEF from the dealer. I filled it up day 5. I have 660miles on it, and its right below 100% now. I bring some if im doing a long haul tow, but with passive regen on the highway, DEF usage isnt to high. These emissions systems are much better than they used to be. Sure i'd love not to have it, personally the diesel is to quiet for me.

You should get around 500miles to a gallon of DEF. its a 5gallon tank.

If anything, have one on hand stored in your basement or somewhere cool, but I wouldn’t keep it in the truck. High temperatures shorten the shelf life of def. leaks are very rare and these trucks really sip def. you will get used to the process after a while and feel a lot more comfortable with how predictable the systems operate. Any questions in the future you know where to find us.
