Hi Guys, i'm interested in buying a newer/new 2500 with the Cummins and want your take on it. I have a 06 Duramax LBZ . This is my 5th Duramax. They have ranged from a 01-15. I have had two cummins in the past (04 and 01). The 04 I didnt care for and the 01 was and extended cab short bed that I felt like I needed to see a Chiropractor every time I got out of it. With that said, I think the newer one have improved over the years and want to give Ram another shot. I have the option of getting a 16 Laramie Cummins with 26k miles for around $44k. Im not sure if I should do that or a new 19 Laramie. I'm not that knowledgeable in the newer Ram Cummins to make an educated decision. Any help would be greatly appreciated

taholland31, welcome to the forum!
You didn't mention how you plan to use your truck. Are you towing, hauling or a mix of everything? Is max payload a requirement and if so, how much do you need?

I just moved up from a 2019 Ram 1500 to a 2019 Ram 2500 Laramie due to payload (1220 vs 2940). I considered a Cummins but the payload was ~900 lbs. less. I went with the 6.4 Hemi to tow a 7000 lbs. travel trailer with 1100 lbs. tongue weight. We leave for a two week trip to Colorado in the mountains so I'll be able to report how the gasser did later!

Please add some details about your needs and I'm sure the guys on the forum will be able to provide better responses. Good luck! BTW, the new safety and towing features are why I went with the '19 vs. better deals on new '18 Cummins.

Sounds like you have had a lot of experience with diesel trucks, so, you know what you're getting there.

My 19 is my first HD truck, so, no first hand experience with the true 4th gen. A '19 equipped similar to that 16 (without 12" screen, safety group, towing tech group, other options not available then) will have an MSRP of around $66-68k... you should be able to get it for around $60 or a little less maybe. That's quite a bit more than the 16... so... if money is your key driver, I would think that would be a huge factor.

From what I have read here and on cumminsforum from guys that had 15-18 rams and now have a 19, they are saying it is a huge step up from their previous trucks. The 19 is quiet inside. I have a 3500... it does ride a little rough unloaded, but, it's a 1-ton truck and I expected that. From what I have heard/read, the 2500 is the best riding HD truck around due to the coil springs. I think Ford's 350 is better than Ram, but, the springs aren't as stiff and you have to go to a 450 to get the same capability as a 3500 Ram. If you're really worried about the ride, the air suspension is also an option to help smooth things out.

thanks for the response. i will say that i just love the diesel. I dont need one. Its just a want thing. I may plan to tow a camper or my tractor at anytime. But mainly i will be driving back and forth to work 60 miles round trip per day. I would be better served by getting a 1500 gas but if I do I know what will happen. I will be at stop light next to a 2500 cummins and i'll say "Dang it, I wish I had that 2500 Cummins)

Thanks for that info on the 19. I have seen some on Autotrader before for around the $58k. I just dont know if i want to go that high over the 16. It might be worth me waiting to see what deals come around as the end of the year approches.

I have thought about the air suspension, but from what i have read so far, it seems that the standard rides better. I will say that i have seen several trucks on the lot and all the few that have had air suspension seem to be sitting level and lower that the standard ones. I like this since I'm only 5'7". I will need to drive both if i go that route.
