Sorry in advance … most likely a dumb question… but I figured I would get my education here….every truck I’ve owned came with 2” receiver … so this new truck looks a bit larger… did they go to a 2.5” inch some time back? Looks like they provide an adapter…

Anyways, can anyone provide insight or a place to go learn a bit more and the larger size and how to go to a 2” receiver.

Thanks in advance.

They have had 2.5" receivers for a while now. As Claw stated, if you want to use your old 2" shank, put the reducer sleeve in there, then insert the shank into that. They made the change because the 2.5" receivers are rated for significantly more weight than 2" ones. FWIW I would never use the reducer sleeve, get a proper 2.5" hitch.

Yep, 2.5" Your options as others have mentioned are a sleeve (which used to be included with the vehicle but MAY now NOT be included, hard to say as some people buy used or didn't check or don't care or the vehicle POI team snagged it) or a new proper sized hitch, better weight rating included. Lot of discussion on the hitches people like here and why if you want to search further.

The B&W below seems well liked here.

Yes HD trucks now come with a 2.5 inch hitch. There are many threads pro and con using the adapter. I myself have purchased a 2.5 inch insert for my W/D hitch because I don't like the extra movement introduced when using the adapter. Others have no problem using the adapter.

Thx...I will try and search some threads and get additional background...

Thx...that helps... I will likely buy the bigger 2.5 hitch...

One drawback I've noticed with the adapter sleeve is that with some hitch/sleeve combinations, sometimes it's tough to get the pin installed because all 6 holes aren't quite lined up together. I assume all those holes are punched so probably not high precision.

22, the last 2500 I had was a 2008...both trucks in between then were 1500's which had the 2.0...

The HD trucks have been a 2.5" receiver for ~10 years now. I'd ditch the adaptor and just get a 2.5" hitch, while it will work I just hate the extra play.

..

I appreciate the feedback...I will likely get a 2.5 hitch... but its sort of a poor design with so many already made 2.0 hitch accessories... I have bike racks, ski racks, cargo racks that have 2.0 necks so I have to use this adapter that will likely move and make noise ect. all the while so I can tow heavier loads for the little time I do.....

It's not "poor" design, it all has to do with increased weight/tow ratings the newer trucks have. A 2" is only rated for 12,500lbs, and 2.5" is rated for 18,500lbs

.

The adapter works fine for me. I can’t have the loss of ground clearance an adjustable hitch inflicts and need a few, so not buying all new since there is no need.

That’s good to hear… going to try next weekend with the boat since I won’t have a 2.5 by that times.

I know my 23 did not come with a reducer sleeve. Gives me a perfect reason to get a new B&W Tow and Stow :)
