Hello Everyone! My first truck (A tundra) that I leased in 2020 is due back next month and my X3 is due back in November... I got a taste of the truck game with my tundra and I'm hooked, looking to go bigger now and purchase an HD truck this go around.

Long story short I need a new truck by November but am unsure if I can afford (timeline wise) to wait for 2023's or if I should bite the bullet on a 22. I recently sold my travel trailer and will be getting a 5th wheel for next year. Based on what I've read a 2500 would be fine for my needs but if I'm getting new I might as well spend the extra for a 3500.

It doesnt seem there is a lot of information out about when the 2023's will be released but assuming it will be next month, based on previous years what are the odds they will hit dealers by November?

There’s a fairly negligible price difference between a 2500 and a 3500. If you add dual rear wheels to the 3500, it’s about $1500 more.

If you order now, depending on what you want, you might be able to take delivery before November. BUT, if you want a fully loaded Limited then I wouldn't count on any delivery estimate that they give you. I think they have stopped taking orders for 22's, there's a thread around here somewhere talking about it.
What engine are you looking at? 6.4 or 6.7? That will drive the deciding factor as well as the size of the 5th wheel.

6.7 HO was the plan. If I'm buying something I want to make sure it can handle whatever we throw at it over the years.

5th wheel isnt a big deal right now as the one we are looking at is light compared to what this thing can handle.
Hitch Weight -1893 lbs
GVWR - 11995 lbs

So it will be a 3500, DRW will give you better stability if you're planning on towing a lot but a SRW should give you enough payload for that and most reasonable 5th wheels.
Plenty of reading you can do here.

I ordered pretty much the exact truck you are looking at (3500 Limited HO) back in December and picked it up end of March. My dealer quoted me 4-6 months and it was just over 4 months to delivery, BUT that was 6 months ago now so things have probably changed. Have you read the most recent posts on the 2022 order thread? That should give you a good idea of delivery timelines.

If I were you id just place the order now, there isnt much harm in doing so.

Yeah Ive been reading evvverrryytthing. Lurking since mid-march. Was originally looking at a Sierra but the refresh isnt happening until 2024 for them. Then I looked at ford because my wife just got a mach-e and the dealer gave me one of the best experiences Ive ever had in my 12 car/truck ordering experience. I wouldnt touch any of those until 2023 either though as I hate Sync4 and they are moving to Android automotive for the 2023 models...

I settled on RAM last but have come to really like them the best based on everything I've seen. Though I still really like the look of the GM trucks the best with their bumper step, it just looks so much more modern.

Anyway - I'm always a hold out for new models but this time I might not be able to swing it so I guess I should just bite the bullet.

I hear ya, only other truck I'd consider is a GMC.

I'm waiting on the zf 8 speed to make it into a Ram behind the Cummins....I'm sure it'll come some day, by then we might be ready to upgrade our camper as we started off with the one we were going to stick with for a while.

Honestly if you order now itll probably be a 2023 BUT it doesn't sound like much is changing for the 2023 models anyway. Maybe some different mirrors and a fully digital cluster seem to be the only changes. I absolutely love my 2022, even if you end up in one I dont think you will be disappointed.

Semi-related, but I wouldnt just hand back either to the dealer. The residual would have been based on a pre-pandemic car shortage price. If you shop your returned lease around, your likley in for a big pay day to cover any difference in cost for a 3500 upgrade.

This is good feedback, I was also in a 2019 Tundra before this truck on lease. I bought the truck at the end of the lease from the bank and then turned around and sold it to the dealer I ordered the Ram from because it had $5k in equity in it.

I got the tundra for an insane deal. I pay $227 per month for a 2 year lease sign and drive. Everything was rolled into that. Went to dealer picked up keys and was sent a first month payment... My buyout is $41k on the 2020 and for some reason no dealer or carmax/carvana has been able to offer me that. Usually get offers around $39kish

On another note. Anyone know a dealer near NJ/PA or anywhere in like a 3 hour drive from there that has no nonsense good deals?

I’m currently driving my very first dually, and I’ve been shocked at how much I love it! Dual wheels and an 8’ bed are just the bomb! Towing stability is exponentially better than any previous Cummins truck I’ve owned to date.

I overlooked when researching to investigate the service departments of the dealers near me. I love my Ram and feel I made the right choice brand wise after research. However, it seems that Ram has the weakest dealer service network and, in our area, by far the worst service experience of the 3 main brands. The two closest dealerships are owned by the same chain, and I and many others have had terrible experiences with them. I have talked to almost every 2019+ Ram owner I encounter locally, and nobody has liked the local Ram dealer. Several take their trucks to the Ford service dept for routine and non-warranty work. Our local Ford dealer service is miles better than Ram. So is the local GMC service. If I had thought to consider after purchase service, I might have opted for either Ford or GMC, but I felt that Ram was the better truck and so far, I love it. I just wish I could trust, or even get service from our dealer. The couple of times I actually get in there, I know more about what is going on from reading this forum, than the service department does. So consider that too in your purchase decision.

I have had a recall and a couple small warranty issues and when I call, the "first" appointment is always 3 or 4 months away which may be b.s. It seems like they maybe just don't want to do warranty work. I had to make an appt for the heater grid recall and the "scheduler" said their first warranty appointment was 3-1/2 months away. I took the truck in the next day for the quick lube oil and filters change and the service writer told me I had the open recall. I explained about the first appt. being 3+ months out and he rolled his eyes and hinted that the scheduler just has to do that. He said they had service technicians standing around looking for something to do and they did it right then.

Most recently I have a leaking shock. The wait for a dealer appointment for that is months. I tried to get in for that on my original heater grid appt as I no longer needed that and it was coming up. They said no and that I had to cancel the heater grid appt. and make a new one for the shock. Then they told me that the shock appointment is only to inspect the shock to make sure it is indeed leaking and it was not damaged by road debris or something. If they determine it is a covered repair, at that point another appointment will be scheduled to replace it. I thought of just replacing the OEM shocks with Bilsteins which I had and liked on my previous truck. But the rears have been backordered and unavailable locally so have not done that either. I wish I was capable of doing work on my vehicles myself as I could just get the shocks online and change them. But I don't have the tools or experience so I am stuck with horrible dealer service and supply chain problems.

ya thats about what I was paying for my Tundra as well. I guess the residual was just a bit lower on the 2019 than 2020 and the market may have cooled a bit since then. Either way, once you tow with your new Ram you'll be stoked.

I've had pretty much the opposite experience with my large volume large metro area (Denver) dealer. You have to ride the service writers/advisors sometimes but they always get me scheduled in a reasonable timeframe.

My only gripe would be the "cannot reproduce" engine chirp (idler/belt) I've reported three times now.

Fleet orders closed but no idea on retail. Shows plant build starts 10/1/22:

No 2023 order dates listed here yet:

Poke around there and you'll find order to delivery showing 22-26 weeks.

Based on 22 order acceptance and plant job #1 dates last year, I'd expect it to be ~2 months later, or July/Aug.

Exactly. That is why I wish I had researched dealer service departments before purchase. I would have easily found out that our area is out of luck in that department. The dealer I purchased from seems to have a good service dept. But they are 12 hours away! I could also probably find a decent service dept 3 to 5 hours north of here also. But my point in suggesting he consider the after sale service factor was just so if he finds he is one of the areas without your level of service competence, he can act accordingly.

By the way, our local dealers service advisors seemed great the couple of times I interacted with them. Unfortunately that dealer does not allow the advisors to schedule appointments. They have a "scheduler" that handles that and she will not bend. When she says 3 or 4 months to the first appt, that is it. Period. No amount of effort on the customer's part will change anything. It really does seem like they are just trying to get you to go away once they know it is warranty work. I mean, I had an appointment for the grid heater recall that I no longer needed and they would not let me use that appt. to bring in the truck to get the shock looked at. They cancelled the recall appt. and said my only choice was a new appt. for the shock, 3-1/2 months out. "Take it or leave it". How crazy bad is that customer service?

As I pointed out above, it is not just my bad luck. A few of the many people with Rams I talked to have had to use this dealer for warranty work and get the same treatment. One guy had his truck break down almost right off the lot last fall. His truck is still sitting at the dealer waiting for a part 8 months later. Taking your Ram to the Ford dealer for any service not covered by warranty seems crazy, but apparently many here do it.

Anyway, I'll stop the ranting. Just wanted the OP to think about service as I did not and sort of wish I had.

And by the way, I really do love the truck itself and just hope I have no more need for warranty work.

Buy out your lease on both of them or at least the truck. Investigate, but I can almost guarantee your truck and likely your X3 is worth quite a bit more than your buyout particularly with a Tundra. Then you can either sell or trade in your truck and MAKE MONEY on it all. My thought is that by doing what I am saying, you will have a bit more flexibility this way time wise and you will get a better deal overall. I went from a 21 1500 because it was not enough truck. I could NOT believe what they gave me for my 2015 1500 Outdoorsman when I got the 2021 1500. I still made out even trading it for a 2500. My thought is that the new 2500's will either be the same as they did all the underneath work in 2019 but stuck with the body. To be honest, the new 1500 body was great. IF they update the body of the 2023 to the level of the 1500 update, it would be worth the wait.

IF you research online, the big truck market has seized up a bit with lot models spending weeks in some cases on lots when here the last year or so they have been gone while still in transit before hitting the lot. Do searches with like CarGurus with your rough parameters on trim, engine, features and do a nationwide search. IF you are willing to drive 500 miles, you can save thousands in some areas of the country. In Montana, by driving to Idaho I save at least five K due to local mark ups vs Idaho.

You are, at this moment in time, sitting pretty IF you can afford the buyouts. Even at higher rates a buyout for a loan would be worth it. I say this because I don't recommend trading at the end of the loan. That is the very point where a dealer can screw you. I called on my buyout four months before the end and was given like a 17K buyout (500 bucks more than if I went to the end of the lease). I looked at trading and the dealer said payoff was 21K and so I would only be upside down a couple thousand bucks, gee how nice of them. I just walked away as someone somewhere was trying to screw me. I was told that leases will make dealers pay more than the purchaser for a buyout. Yeah, right. Oh, I ended up buying the 1500 about 9 months later in June 2021 and they gave me 28K for my 70 miles 2015 truck that had an undiagnosable electrical problem awaiting an FCA tech visit.

IF Ram is not updating anything, go for a 2022 vs a 2023 is my recommendation. Prices/MSRP are going up. My 2500 bought early March was 1800 less MSRP than "IDENTICAL" ones that came in just a week or so later than mine. Then another 1800 buck increase hit after and maybe a third since so now mine was 63,600 and now they are MSRP over 66K, same options. 2023's will certainly take a hit as the manufacturers realize how much dealers are marking things up and have decided to get a piece of the action.

I really do wwish my tundra had equity but it doesnt seem that way. As you can see the buy out price is sooooo close to MSRP. All the offers I've received from dealers have been to the tune of 38-40k.
2020 tundra SR5
MSRP: $46,628
Buy out price: $41,900
Current mileage: 19,200

The BMW is a little more tricky. That one I really have to crunch numbers as we get closer to the lease maturity as I'm ~25,000 miles over the agreed lease amount. Unfortunately my wife got in a minor accident with it that required a fender replacement and someone backed into it another time at a grocery store which went through their insurance. Though, it stilll is probably on a carfax somewhere. So 2 accidents will most likely hurt the resell value of it. Because it's a lease we couldnt claim a loss of value credit from the insurance company.

So the pickle I'm in there is I either pay out the additional mileage ~$6687 OR I buy it out and own a BMW with ~70,000 miles. Both are terrible options lol.
