Hey all. I have been considering a 3/4 ton for a while now and once I saw the new Rams I fell in love. Been looking at travel trailers for a while and the only one the whole family agrees on is 10k pounds. I had a Dakota a few years back and even though it was no frills, it was a great truck, never gave me a single issue. I look forward to beating you all for info to help me make a good decision once I'm ready to pull the trigger.

Fred

Welcome!

I had a 2005 Dakota and aside from some small issues, it gave me 137K miles and a good chunk of that was towing.
And good plan on figuring out the TT you want *before* getting the truck...

Thanks @Gondul. I had my '07 Dakota for 10 years and 153k miles. I only had it in the shop once fo a CEL that a software update fixed. Unfortunately I traded it on a Nissan Frontier that won't do what I had hoped it would. I didn't realize when I got it that even though it could tow 6500 pounds, that didn't mean it would tow 6500 pounds of what I wanted it to. So for the past 2 years I have been trying to soak up every bit of knowledge I can on trucks, trailers and towing. At times I almost wonder if I should just go 4500 duelly then I it wont matter what I put behind it...

Welcome to the group. We love talking about camping and towing and hauling. Some guys got their trucks, some have already used them, some are still making their decisions.

As @Gondul said, you did it right by getting a travel trailer in mind first and then going for the truck.

Glad to see you chose RAM to search.

Everyone has an opinion about how to tow and with what.

A 10000 lb travel trailer is definitely 2500 territory, although people will tell you their 1500 tows 13000 just fine.

The best thing about a properly optioned 2500 is you don't have to plan where to pack the pillows to get your weight right.

And at 10000 lbs the 6.4l HEMI is just as good an option as the Cummins.

Good luck with your search and thanks for joining us

Also new to the forum (1st post) and waiting on delivery for my 2500, as well.

We first upgraded from our 6000 lb travel trailer & purchased the Grand Design Reflection 150 295RL 5th wheel (supposedly a 1/2 ton could pull any of this series, hence the "150" designation). We also then agonized a bit over which truck to get.

Yes, a 3500 with a Cummins turbo diesel will tow better, but our trailer dry weight is 9995 lb and I was told by 3 out of 3 dealers that the 6.4l Hemi will do the job just fine. I suppose going up (and down) mountains will be a little dicier at times, but having heat during non-trailer towing winter days with short trips tipped the scale in favor of the gasser.

If the wife wants to upgrade to a larger 5th wheel in the future, then the diesel will be needed, but until then, I will just enjoy the superb exhaust note from the Hemi! :)
