Hi all. I have a 2021 3500 on order that will hopefully be here by the end of January. I ordered it with the 50-gal fuel tank. When fuel prices were very high, there were times when I couldn’t fuel up my ‘03 fully due to the bill being over $100. I had contacted the card company, and the gas station, and both pointed at eachother saying the Other one limited it, call them. So my question for those of you with large aftermarket tanks, how do you fuel up fully? Do you just run the card twice each time. This new larger tank on the ‘21 will be the same situation as fuel prices go up.

Gotta run that card again 99% of the time.

Yea, it's so incredibly stupid that they think the limit will cut their theft losses when you can just run the card again. It really is between the merchant and their payment processor 95% of the time. With some card issuers, it's a matter of a limit when they see that $1 pre-auth come in.

If you use a truck stop/lanes, you'll almost always have to drop a card with them to fuel up anyway unless you have a fuel program card that is accepted at the pumps. In either case, you can fuel up completely.

tell the person inside at the register “put $150 on #”

I have a gasbuddy card connected to my bank account, I can run the first $75 on that and then a 2nd go with a credit card. If I still need more (CA prices) I will go with ApplePay, if possible, but the easiest route is to tell the person inside at the register.

It's the fuel station and their credit card processor. The Conoco by my house has a $100 limit. The Shell up the street is $75. It's asinine that these limits haven't changed for decades while gas tanks have gotten larger and fuel more expensive.

And how many vehicles have 35+ gallon tanks? I also remember limiting folks to number of gallons they can purchase at once.

I don’t have the larger fuel tank but I do fuel up a boat with a 150 gallon tank. I go inside and put a specified $$ amount on the pump. I have found in the past that you can only run a card twice and then it wont work the 3rd time.

Good info!

Jesus you Americans have it rough for once i can just fill till the tanks are full i used to fill a 200 gallon slip tank and the truck one shot had to go in to pay after pumping also can prepay 200$ With the bankcard or credit card at the pump as many times as i want

Ya i have ran into that also on road trips. Typically that is when paying at the pump though. I have gone inside and they can still run it.

That dang gas dock has no limit though. Pump just keeps going and going...at least it's better scenery than a truck stop.

Sometimes you have to make a special arrangement if you are going for a big fill. The boats we are looking at have 1000+ gallon tanks. Usually, not a problem at commercial docks but some places will bring a truck out. The price of good scenery and life style :)

How big is that boat?

Sounds more like a Houseboat with toy tanks.

We are looking for a Nordhavn in the 47 to 55 foot range. It will be our home for a few years after we throw off the landlines. We will just be trading one home for another. All Nordhavns 40' or larger can circumnavigate the globe. If you have enough fuel to make a 2400 NM passage you can circumnavigate although all the piracy around Somalia has made it a pain. You either need more fuel to bypass the area or load your boat on a yacht transport ship. Most insurance will not cover you in that area.

When I started off in the boating industry I worked for a yacht manufacturer. We built 55 to 100 ft, but also refit earlier models up to 200 ft. Powered by twin, with optional triple, marine diesels each as big as a car. I think the max propulsion at the time was triple 2,400 hp Cats and well over 100 gallons per hour to break through 33 knots. I don't recall the tank size but I can remember when fuel prices were high spending $20,000 to fill the tank for a larger delivery down the coast.

I'm a freshwater man now.
