A while ago when I hit 20K on the truck the dealer recommended I do an "Induction cleaning" for ~$300. My buddy who is an R&D engineer at Cummins says that the process removes DPM from the valves, EGR, DPF and grid heater and didn't really comment on if it is necessary at 20K/ the corresponding engine hours. He said if you're doing city driving or cold weather the necessity for this service increases which makes sense.

What are all your experiences with having this done? If you've had it done, at how many miles/engine hours?

Never had it done on any off my old 500k+ cummins trucks why would i start now just drive it hard once in a while problem solved just a dealer upsell

We do this on our buses at 100k. It cleans the EGR, DOC and DPF. It help make the EGR cooler last a lot longer (ie not clogging) It also helps the DPF and DOC last a lot longer( not needing to be removed and baked) However all this is in a 40ft bus thats always stopping and going. As for your question, i dont believe its needed, especially at 20k miles. Just keep up with the normal maintenance and youll be fine.

My buddy has a 1500 Ecodiesel and went to the dealer for an oil change. At 15,000 miles they told him he needed a transmission service, about $400. I suggested he call the manager and complain. The manager said it’s good preventative maintenance. Total scam! People that know nothing about their cars and trucks are cheated by these dealers all the time .
