Idling….how much is too much?

Hello! I have about 1900 miles on my 2021 2500 Cummins CC truck. I hear a lot about making sure you idle the truck as little as possible (I think because of the Emissions system?) However, I also read about letting the truck warm up before driving and letting the turbo cool down after towing prior to shutting the truck off. Curious if anyone has any info on what’s too much idling? Or am I just being paranoid on trying to not let the truck idle as much as possible? Any info is appreciated!

Dont worry about it aslong as you are not leaving it run for days on end you wont have an issue… when you idle it you could turn the cruise on and hit set and it will bring the idle to 1100 rpm its the best way to idle the truck

Appreciate the responses! Curious on the high idle, is the benefit that it has the higher RPM’s to keep things hot? I’ll give that a try.

Diesels are also very efficient. They run lower rpms (less fuel, less heat) than gas motors. Lots of people would rather just let their truck idle for 10 minutes than turn it off and back on again.

Two things on high idle.

Initial - tap to idle at 1100 can be increased with additional taps.

1. It may not register as idle time.
2. It's less likely to "wash" oil from the cylinder walls and make oil (fuel in oil).

Nothing to do with temps mainly it keeps the cyl from getting washed down because idle does not always burn all the fuel injected in to the cyl
the other thing is it helps circulate the oil…

Makes sense, thank you for the info! I will try the high idle if it’s sitting for a little while but otherwise just enjoy it! I can’t say enough about the torque and towing power of this truck. It’s impressive what it can do and how comfortable it can be while towing/driving.
