I need to add a rear cargo camera to a ‘22 3500 Mega cab

I have discovered my first mistake/oversight when purchasing this truck. It didn’t come with a rear cargo camera. Purely my fault, but when getting a Longhorn level truck, plus it being a dually (pretty much made to tow), who would even imagine that it didn’t have a rear cargo camera. Even my F350 XLT came with one. Anyway….. what are my options for adding this? Can I just buy the OEM rear brake light with the built in camera and plug & play? Or is it going to be more complicated? I use the cargo camera when hooking up gooseneck trailers all the time. I have to have one, even if aftermarket is my only option.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Infotainment carries it along with everything needed to hook it up

I could use clarification of part numbers needed for my 2021 Bighorn also. I currently have the standard backup camera, but no other camera systems. I am having difficulty figuring out the part number for the new CHMSL. I currently have the premium lighting package, but I think my center mount stop light uses standard bulbs. I don't know if that matters though. I also have the 8.4" screen, w/o NAV.

I know I need a custom wire harness, and I planned on purchasing the KAOdTECH unit, unless something would would work better.

Any help would be appreciated!

To each their own, but I have a 22 bighorn dually with the cargo camera and I find it to be almost useless in hooking up my gooseneck trailer due to the low quality of the camera output (I have an 8.4 non-nav system). There have been other threads on here about the video quality with varying levels of reasoning if the quality is correct or not...

just a thought before going down the road of adding it

Put a magnetic phone mount in the bed and video call yourself from your wife's phone. I too am looking into the cargo mount camera as that is one thing I didn't think I would need but now wish I had it.

There are options out there... I made the same mistake when i ordered my '21. Forgot to check that box. Ugh!

I can remember hooking up gooseneck horse trailers as a kid without one, and we did fine, but I’m pretty dependent on them now. Sure makes it easy when you are by yourself. I’ll have to find a solution to this. Regardless of how good the video resolution is.

I was hoping this was an easy fix and someone would offer up a simple solution (maybe I’m lazy?) without me having to dig in and start researching. Thus taking me down endless rabbit holes. We need to add a 3rd brake light mounted camera with high resolution. This can’t be that damn hard. And it shouldn’t have to cost $750+ plus either.

I was looking into this as well as the digital review mirror. The tough part is getting the right part for your options and you're 100000% right, rabbit hole. If you can find the thread about adding a digital review mirror, it has the parts listed for CHSML based on your options list. Ill try digging for the page

It looks like this is correct part # for the 3rd brake light with the camera built in. So when I take out the current one and plug this one in, I wonder what else I’m gonna need to do?

It'll depend on which camera's you have on your truck. Thats the confusing part

Oh course your free to do what you want but the world has worked with 90 years without cargo cameras, I don’t see the point in a camera that’s gonna fail in a few years.
