I need advice/help

2019 ram 2500 Cummins 4x4.


Long story short. I had new tires put on the truck yesterday. The tire place broke three of my Lugnuts in half two on the drivers rear, and one on the passenger rear. After market wheels and tires.They tried to remove the broken portion, but made it worse. There's nothing left to grab a hold on. Currently driving around with 2 new tires up front and old ones in the rear due to not being able to remove the rear wheels.



Is there a way to remove wheel,tire,hub,rotor,caliper everything all at one time so that I can cut the back of the stud and replace the wheel studs?
 
I don’t have any issues doing this myself. Honestly, I would prefer it. I have just never attempted to try to remove everything in one shot but I have no choice. The Lugnuts aren’t coming off and the only way to fix this is the cut the back of the stud and then push it the other direction.
 
From what I remember when I worked in a tire store I high school, we would break them all off if that ever happened. Then just drive the old studs out from the front and replace with new studs. Of course I could be way off here.
 
yeah, my problem is I have a rounded off half piece of Lugnuts stuck on the studs. I’m gonna have to go from the back somehow.
 
Weld a nut to the broken lug nut. Also you could try and use an air chisel to knock the remainder of the lug off.

This is what I have vs what it's supposed to look like. As you can see they screwed me bad.

Back to my original question....had anyone ever had to romove the entire assembly without removing the wheel and tire first?

Nut splitter will not work, torch probably won’t work without destroying the rim you got yourself a good one there. Vice grips won’t fit without destroying the room.
 
Was this a local place? I used to get tires on my cars at costco but after they broke off lug nuts the first two times I used them I stopped. They, or at least my store do not replace them. I was referred to a tire shop who replaced them free of charge with the costco voucher to repair, but had to make an appointment which took two days and then they kept the car all day. Now I get all my tires, auto, truck and 5th wheel at America's Tire (Discount Tire in some parts of the country, same company) have not had any broken lugs since. BTW with regards to yours...small (thin) sharp chisel and hammer to cut the rest of the lug away.

It’s funny, you say discount tire, they are the ones who broke my Lugnuts...
 
I would use a die grinder with a small pointy carbide bit. Patiently cut the lug nut remnant off. Remove wheel. Try to repair threads but most likely just replace the stud.

Also... Get a quote from a shop for their cost to fix... Submit that to the tire shops customer relations folks for a full refund of atleast that cost... Plus I'd insist adding refund for what you paid them. Impact + lugs = f-around and find out.
 
Agee with others on the die grinder to get them off.

Looking at your pictures, the nuts look like they require a special socket. I would pull the covers off the other studs and make sure they did not damage any of the others. They may have removed them with a flat sided 6-point socket, yours look convoluted.
 
Question is, are those tapered lug nuts or flat lug nuts if they’re tapered, it’s gonna go down into the aluminum rim.

Exactly....I worked on 1 of the 3 nuts today. Used sockets,extractors,chisel,grinder with cobalt bit.... There is no way this is coming off without messing up the wheel. I'm going to need to get to it from the back.

Here is my plan so far:

Remove the two bolts holding on the caliper.

Remove the axle.

Remove the clip. Holding the key way.

Remove the keyway and hub nut.

Remove the outer bearings.

Lastly, remove the break line to the caliper so the caliper will stay on the rotor.

From here it looks like I should ( in Theory) be able to remove the entire thing in one shot. It's going to be heavy but it should work..

Grind the stud shoulder off from the back and push them through to the front. This will free up the wheel for me to install new studs.

Then just put everything back together, and bleed the breaks.

The caliper mounting bracket needs to come off before the rotor will come off. It's bolted to the axle housing with 2 bolts but not sure if you can get bracket/caliper off without first removing the caliper. The bracket is bolted to the inside (opposite from the wheel) and not sure you can clear the bracket to get it off.

EDIT-> I would take it back to the tire place and get them to foot the bill to get them off and or replace the wheels.

Just took a look at the truck. If I remove the two 21mm caliper bracket bolts it would free up the whole break system....and of course disconnecting the break line.

People are probably wondering why I just don't take my truck back or have someone else fix this. Without going into to much detail, I simply don't have time. This tire appointment was scheduled 2 months in advance if that gives you any indication.

I'm well capable of doing the work myself...would have done the tires too if I had a machine. Maybe this is why I hate others working on my truck.

When the new lugs arrive I will try and document the job progress and post pictures if it will help anyone else.

I understand that there is a normal process for removing all this stuff but unfortunately I have an abnormal problem and just wanted to see if anyone here has ever run into this issue. These always a fix...just need to figure out the best way as to not cause anymore damage or problems.
