I was talking to one of the kids about how DPFs work and the issues you can have if you don't get it hot enough from towing or driving a distance on the highway.

He asked me why you couldn't just wrap the DPF with header tape? Good question, it holds heat in headers, would it do the same to the DPF?

The DPF already contains a heavy layer of insulation around the inner canister and media. The idea is to help hold heat, while also shielding the outside of the canister (and everything else under the truck) from the high heat (1,000-1,100°F) that is present when the truck goes into an active regeneration cycle.

Well, that answers that, it'd be pointless then to put more insulation on it. I'll tell him.

I didn't realize it got that hot.

Its not really a heat loss issue its the issue of the exhaust temps being too low right out of the cylinders. Diesels don’t make a ton of heat especially if they are not worked hard
