I've been lurking on the site the past few days while working on a deal for a new 2024 Ram 2500 Tradesman. I took my 2024 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe to the dealer for an oil change and software update last week. The salesman that sold me my Wrangler last November asked me if I knew anyone that needed a new heavy duty Ram diesel. I replied that my dad had just bought a used 2023 Chevy Duramax 3500 last week for $60k, and I was tempted to upgrade my 2021 Toyota Tundra to something more capable for towing. The salesman said they had a couple of leftover 2024 Ram 2500s with 4x4, Cummins, and crew cab configurations for under $60k.

I went out to the lot and was astonished to see a pretty well-equipped 2024 Ram 2500 Tradesman with a diesel for $56k.

I took it for a spin and was impressed with how it drove and felt. It felt smaller and more nimble than my Tundra.

I bought my Tundra used a couple of years ago for $49k. Stock 1794 Edition with 49k miles on it. I added a few goodies to make it more capable in the woods and it has been reliable and bulletproof.

But, while the Tundra has been awesome and trouble-free, I ran into it's limitations last weekend when I removed the canopy and tried to haul my ATV into the Idaho mountains for camping. The Tundra had the giant cab, so had the smallest bed. The bed is 5.5'. My only passenger is my Belgian Malinois mix, Arlo. He doesn't require a CrewMax rear seat area.

But, my 2023 Yamaha Kodiak 450 does require at least a 6' bed. I have a Decked bed storage system in the Tundra. It made for a very cramped and sketchy hauling situation. I have a small pop-up camper for camping, so getting it and the ATV into the woods at the same time meant that I needed a pickup that could haul the ATV while towing the camper.

It worked last weekend, but just barely...

So I decided I either had to invest in a toy hauler or a truck with a bigger bed.

I gave the salesman an impossible number that I was comfortable with if I traded in my Tundra. I basically wanted retail value for the Tundra and I kept the canopy. I heard nothing for a couple of days, then the salesman called back and said they would do it. I declined and decided to just keep the Tundra and live with the limitations. I'm retiring in a few years and will then be getting a bigger RV and truck, but didn't need it now.

A couple more days later, the salesman called back and offered another couple grand to my trade. I couldn't turn that down. So I'll be picking it up today. I've always envied the Cummins trucks, but couldn't afford a new one, and the used ones around here are pretty beat by farmers and bros rolling coal.

Looking forward to getting mine and leaving it mostly stock except for 35s and maybe a front winch bumper.

Here's a link to my YouTube channel in which I will be chronicling the modifications and build of the new Ram...
