1600 mile trip from WY to MN and back. Unfortunately truck only made 1400. 2022 3500 6.7HO DRW. DEF warning came on south central SD, 125 miles to limp mode. Nearest dealer 250 miles. 125 miles at 5mph, 25 hours. I loved my truck until today now it garners the same trust as an unfaithful wife. Called several dealers, no help. Tried to clear codes, engine light went off, but DEF code says permanent. No recall on sensor or system. This will take a class action lawsuit.

One of the dealers said don’t shut it off until you get to where you are going. Not sure if that would have helped, advice came to late. Might as well have an electric vehicle when Ram dealers out here are a minimum of 100 miles apart and usually 200 miles. 5000 miles on the truck and ready to trade. Not sure a different brand would help, the sensors are probably all made at the same Chinese factory.

Yeah, if your countdown reaches 0 the truck will not go into limp mode until you turn it off and restart it. When you cleared the code did your countdown reset? I have heard with older trucks you can keep resetting the countdown by clearing the engine light.

The truth is all of these systems will fail its just a matter of time. To make the situation worse I have read of many dealers trying to get out of warranty work by stating the customers DEF is contaminated. For us 2022+ trucks tuning is an option but its over 4k dollars to do so. However, 4k is cheaper vs buying new emissions equipment that will fail again. If you own a modern diesel and drive in cold climates you will get to know your dealer very well!

The countdown would not clear. I like my dealer but don’t want to know him better. Course plotted

The dealer said they updated PCU? and did a manual regen. The DPF gauge was zero but he said the DPF was plugged. Had just driven more than 500 miles at 75 mph. So did the manual regen even contribute to the correction? It sounds like they just cleared the code. How? What program is required? They won’t say, most likely due to what they can bill as this does not seem like a problem that is going to be resolved. Does anybody know what program is required to do manual regen and clear the DEF code. I have an OBD MX+, OBDlink & JScan, a mobile hotspot, IOS, and android/windows.

Sorry about this situation OP. Other than not needing house pulling power this is exactly why I went with the gasser. Its insane that they can disable a truck on the grounds of it "polluting" more after some sort of mechanical or electrical failure. The correct word "dangerous" was used earlier and I totally agree. A good way to get people killed in a blizzard!

I thought of you and your posts about buying a gasser while sitting in my diesel in a dark parking lot for hours waiting for a tow. It does seem that the DEF system is the biggest or at least most common problem with the 6.7HO. Maybe after a couple of oil changes I will deal with it permanently despite warranty issues.

Thats the only way I'd purchase a new diesel - if I had the intention of deleting it right away starting with the DEF system.

My 2020 sat outside for over a week in -30C temps recently. The DEF fluid should have been frozen rock hard at this temp. After plugging it in for a few hours, it fired up with no issues and I probably drove it for several hours with no issue. The DEF tank was at 1/2.

Similar situation with no issues. Day 1 of owning truck sat outside at -24*F overnight. Fired up in the morning with no issues and drove several hundred miles in the cold. Cold weather does not appear to impact all DEFs the same.

Manual regen doesn’t have anything to do with DEF, nor does the DPF. Dealer likely has no clue, which is unfortunate.

AlfaOBD can do a manual regen and clear codes.

If the def heater is not working does it set a code?

Wasn't the date announced as 2035 for this?..
The way I heard it every vehicle after 25 would need to be hi-bred or electric. They also announced a couple months ago that farmers would have to cut their nitrogen fertilizer use by 50% in a couple years. I shure hope nobody is hungry. Communists like to control the movement of the citizens and the food supply …o_O.
