Officially fixed the dreaded belt chirp on the 5th gen Cummins. The TSB of replacing the harmonic balancer and belt 100% fixed the belt chirp/squeak. For those of you who have this. This 100% fixed this problem.

Just sent my truck in for this TSB, and the dealership is jerking me around.

When I first bought the truck new in February 2020 it had this problem and I had it to the dealer 2 - 3 times that year, and eventually they did something that made it go away for a while. Eventually I got a separate daily driver and stopped driving the truck very often and was keeping it in the garage. Fast forward to April 2024, I had to use the truck one cold morning and noticed it was back, but I was happy to discover this TSB and immediately called the dealership and took their earliest appointment on May 18th. When I scheduled the appointment online, I included a link to a video of the chirp happening from April 23rd and I included the TSB number that would take care of it.

When I actually dropped the truck off, the service writer did not inspire confidence. He made it sound like I was bringing the truck in out of warranty even though my truck only has 35,000 miles on it and still has a powertrain warranty until February 2025. I showed him the video and pointed out the TSB# on the appointment comments. He said they'd try and diagnose it, but if they couldn't get it to make the noise they'd be unable to diagnose and I'd be on the hook for $185 diagnostic fee. I also noticed some oil residue in a few places like behind the crank pulley and along the timing case, that was considered a separate issue that would also carry a $185 diagnostic fee if they couldn't find it or deemed it wasn't a warranty issue.

Well, tomorrow night it'll have been there for a full week, and I haven't heard anything back, so I called for an update. They said they were not able to diagnose it yet because it's too warm outside now and it won't make the chirp, so they're going to continue to try... Well summer is here and it won't be cold enough for the foreseeable future, and it really seems like they're lining up to charge me for time spent "Diagnosing" the issue they can't replicate. Very frustrating.

Mine chirped regardless of temp. It was even worse after towing all day.

Dealer sounds pretty sh*tty. Mine finally caved after 3 complaints and showing them videos and the TSB. Then I couldn't get it on for like 6 months they claimed tech shortage and then I found out they "sent the part back."

Fortunately, my son now works at that dealership and re-ordered the parts kit (damper and belt) and did the TSB for me a few weeks ago, I've only driven the truck once since, but haven't heard anything.

If they were to turn around and say:

"hey man, you're still under warranty, we see this has been an issue in the past with your truck, we'll waive the Diagnostic fee and you can bring it back in the fall when the weather changes and we'll take care of it then."

I'd be totally OK with that.

What's pissing me off is it really seems like they're wasting time and going to try and slam me with a $185 fee for nothing. Also this weekend is memorial day weekend, and I don't have my truck to put mine and my moms boats in the lake for the season, and if it were actually getting fixed, whatever bad timing but it needs to be done. However they're just sitting on it, knowing at this point they probably won't be able to hear the noise to diagnose and fix it.

Wondering if squeak comes on gradually or instant at a random time. So far with engine running, i hear nothing. I thought the squeak/ chirp is heard when shutting off engine... A video would be great to see.

With my truck, it's only when it's sitting for several hours in the cold. About 20 seconds after I start it, it starts chirping for about 30 - 40 seconds before it stops on it's own and it's OK until the next cold start.

AHHHH!!!! so its not the old sequel chirp like olden days? Its more of a faint cricket sequence noise!!! Got it now..... darn, i dont have that yet...

Just heard back from the dealership, the service writer calls up and says "hey, good news the tech found a tsb in the system for your issue."

And I responded, yeah I know there's a tsb, I said that several times and even included the TSB# in the appointment notes and pointed it out to you when I dropped the truck off.

He kinda just dodged that statement and proceeded to tell me Ram would not cover it because I'm outside of warranty... So I asked him, the Crank pulley is part of the motor right? I still have until February on my 5 year 100k power train warranty. So he said he would have to talk to his supervisor about it and his supervisor had already left for the weekend.

@RamCares Care to provide some clarification on this? They may very well call me Tuesday and say yeah you're right, it's covered under the power train warranty, but I'm not holding my breath. Although even if I am technically outside of warranty coverage for this issue, this is an ongoing issue that the dealer worked on several times without success, so I would think it should still be covered because it's an existing issue with the truck.

We'd be more than happy to look into this for you. Please send us a private message with your VIN and current mileage for a full breakdown of your warranty(s).

The saga continues... Why can't anything just be simple?

I get a call Tuesday morning from the dealership, the service writer tells me "hey good news, we got everything pushed through under warranty, however the tech said you need a new serpentine belt, that's going to be $360 installed."

At the time I was driving and didn't have anything in front of me, like the notes I had on the cost of parts for the TSB in case I opted to do it myself, and I didn't have the TSB in front of me to know what was included in it. Although even without my notes, this didn't make sense to me, if everything is covered under warranty, as in my Harmonic Balancer TSB, and leaking timing cover, why was I getting charged for labor to change the belt when they would have to pull the belt anyway to do the warranty work. I was also unclear about having to pay for a new belt as well, but at this point it's going on 2 weeks without my truck and I need it back so I figure I'd meet him in the middle. I told him if the truck needs a new belt it is what it is, I'll pay for the belt, but why do I have to pay you to install it when that's involved in the warranty job?

He said, oh yea I see what your saying let me call you back on this. 5 minutes later he calls back, tells me I'm right, and all I have to pay for is the belt itself which is $168 + tax. Initially I thought he said $68 + tax, but that was clarified and he was indeed charging me $168 +tax for just a belt, a belt that is part of the TSB. I ultimately agreed to pay for the belt because I've got too many other things going on in my life to continue to have to worry about this and when I'm getting my truck back.

When I finally get back to my shop, I'm still thinking about the cost of the belt, $168 + Tax for a belt? That seems way high, so I look back in my notes, and sure enough when I had calls parts last week they quoted me somewhere around $64 for the belt + tax, that's it. Just in case I googled the part number 05281817AA to see if maybe the parts guy was giving me a good discount, and he was, list price on that belt seems to be $91, but $91 + tax is still a far cry from $168 + tax. Now even after all the previous BS, this is what finally pissed me off to the point where I felt like the service writer is trying to screw me any way he possibly could to get some extra money for this repair and I felt the need to go over his head.

When I bought the truck, my sales guy happened to be an immediate family member of the dealership owner, and he told me if I ever needed anything reach out to him directly and he'll take care of it. I honestly believe that and I do think he's a very nice guy that does mean it, so I reached out to him via Email, and he got back to me immediately and we had a conversation on the phone. I told him I wanted to give him the chance to make it right instead of throwing them under the bus directly to Stellantis, then I voiced my concerns, basically explained everything from this post and my last post. He said he'd look into it and call me back. A few minutes later he called me back and apologized, saying the service writer I had was brand new and some of my concerns were due to his inexperience, he also said the parts guy had given me a wholesale price on the belt, which they would honor and that's all I'd have to pay for. He also said he would have the truck delivered back to me so I wouldn't have to have the hassle of getting a ride to pick it up, which I felt was a very nice gesture.

That all did make me feel a little better, but he's mainly on the sales/management side of things and knows very little about the service side other than what his minions tell him. So I still feel like my point was missed, that, A: the belt itself is still part of the TSB that's supposed to be covered under warranty I shouldn't have to pay for it at all, and B: even if the belt wasn't covered, why was the guy charging me almost double the list price for said belt?

It seems these are questions I will never know the answer to, but hopefully they'll have the truck back to me by Friday, which would be great since I'm supposed to take my Son to his first monster truck show, along with my Wife, my Father and a good friend. Fitting 4 full grown adults and my sons car seat in my wifes Equinox is going to be a tight fit if my truck isn't back in time.

I'm a little concerned I may have, as the saying goes, "insulted the alligator before crossing the river" by going over the service department to an owner before getting the truck back. My initial reaction to everything was to wait until I had the truck back before lodging complaints and hope I'd get reimbursed, but the inflated price of the belt really really got under my skin and I didn't wait. I was told by the parts guy when I inquired about TSB parts pricing last week, all the parts were at a local warehouse and would arrive next day. I was also told by the service writer and the owner Tuesday, parts would be in next day, and I should be able to have my truck back by Friday. Well, yesterday afternoon I got a voicemail saying my parts didn't show, and that they should arrive tomorrow (thursday), maybe it's a coincidence or maybe the service department is pissed I stirred the pot, either way it's more aggravation I don't need.

Looks like they were able to finish my truck and get it back to me this morning, yay. I inspected everything, I see fresh sealant on the timing cover, a brand new crank pulley, and a brand new serpentine belt. When looking at the invoice though, I see they didn't actually reference the TSB anywhere, it's all just individual line items for different parts...

So I'm not sure what kind of game they were playing there, but that explains how/why they were still charging me for a serpentine belt. I don't know if they did it this way because they were able to get reimbursed for more labor or what vs the TSB which only specified 1 hour of labor for the whole job.

They did still try and whack me $17X.xx after tax for just the belt, they called to setup delivery of my truck and take payment for the belt, and I gave them the card number before i realized they didn't give me a total. I quick asked them to confirm the total and she said $17X.xx, so I called them out on it and the total was adjusted to $6X.xx + tax. Overall I'm content, I consider the whole thing a wash since they delivered the truck to me, the time and BS saved by not having to find a ride up there was worth what they ultimately charged me for the belt.

It just sucked it took 2 weeks a so much back and forth.
