I’ll be picking my new truck up 6hrs from home. On the way home, do I need to vary the speed or stop after X miles/hrs to help break the cummins in? Or can I just hop in and roll all the way home?
Nowadays engines are so much better designed and the tolerances of its components are so good compared to 50 years ago. In the past flat tappet engines required a break in but they are not the standard any more. I would still do a short break in on high specific power engines (>150hp/ liter), when they are used as race engines.
So far I have not seen engines which show abnormal wear due to a lack of break in (hot scuff, cold scuff test etc....). If there is a scuff or similar then it is usually a quality or design issue.
Warm up is more important than break in.
The idle comment below is due to the fact that there are people in some countries they believe in idle break in. That causes a lack of lubrication of the cylinder wall. The engine needs to spin a little faster to fling the oil from the crankshaft towards the cylinder walls.
Hope that helps.
