What are everyones thoughts on using the engine brake? Towing only? Or use in auto mode when not towing? Don't use at all?

I use the exhaust brake all the time. Manual mode on the highway when not towing and Auto mode in Tow/Haul while towing the big dog house. Manual mode is intended to reduce the speed of the vehicle. Auto mode is intended to maintain the speed of the vehicle, which comes in real handy when descending them monster hills while towing.

I use mine on full most of the time. I'll switch to auto normally on long trips that have small rolling hills.

And another thing... use of the exhaust brake when the engine is cold, when it's cold, will accelerate the time it take for Cummins to arrive at its optimal operating temp. However, leave it alone when it's snowing or there may be ice on yer chosen path.

i use full brake mode when driving around in the city. i use the auto brake mode when cruising on the
hwy. basically, it's always on, in one mode or the other.

Use it....its on there with or without tow haul so it has a purpose. If I am in stop and go traffic Ill engage tow/haul and full exhaust brake and I save my brakes a lot of heating cycles. I see no issues.

I remember my '12 3500 and I tested the engine brake on a wide open road with snow and its no joke. DO NOT use it when there is snow or ice. I even shied away from it when I had no load and it was raining

Same...on full first thing in the morning then auto...it’s become muscle memory when I start the truck now. Really does help and transmission downshifting schedule becomes more pronounced.

Is there a way to have it turn on automatically or recall the last setting?
I think I had it once but can’t remember what special circumstances as I wondered why exhaust brake was on when I started the truck....will test it out...think I had a trailer plugged in, tow mode on and turned off the truck. Once I started her back up again, tow mode was off but the exhaust brake was on as the same trailer was still connected...

not sure but will try it out...

If it's like my old 4th gen during cold weather the exhaust brake is on during remote start to help warm up faster. It was nice to have that advance idle too. But once I actually got in and turned the key to on the exhaust brake would turn back off

Yes, that's it. If you have a trailer hooked up, it will come on when you start. Also the backup sensors will be disabled.
