Dumbest Bug(?) on the 2025 Transmission

I just thought this was pretty dumb to miss, I'm assuming it's a bug...

The transmission does not stay "locked" when remote starting...
  • On the 68RFE, remote starting will leave the transmission "locked". That is, you can't shift into gear until you press the Start button again once in the vehicle. It's obviously a theft prevention measure.
  • With the ZF, remote starting unlocks the transmission(!). However, shifting into D or R will shut-down the engine. You then need to shift back to P and restart. Pressing the Start button before shifting works as you'd expect of course.
So, there's no security issue here... just annoying that the engine would shut-down versus locking the transmission as done with the 68FRE.

Rant over.

@RamCares - Maybe you could report this for me as a bug?... I'm sure it can be fixed via programming.

I can’t say for certain, but I’d assume that’s intended behavior. A lot of other vehicles shut off if you try to shift them when they’ve been remote started.

Normal on electronic shift transmissions. There’s no BTSI solenoid for the column shifter, so there needs to be an immobilizer shutdown if the start button isn’t pressed.

I see. So it's not a bug then... it's expected behavior given the constraints of this new transmission.

I can live with it!

My wife had a Nissan Rogue or something that did that. I’d cuss every time it did it. My Power Wagon with the dial is locked until you press the start button.

Yeah my PW (ZF) it’s locked until you push the start button. That seems like a better way to let you know the action is not allowed rather than letting you shift but then shutting down the engine, making you shift back to P, restart, and then shift to gear.

Honestly it doesn’t make sense to me either. It’s locked when off so why can’t they leave it locked when remote started.

At the end of the day, this is a very first world problem!

Sadly with the ‘25s even the Hemi gets the 1960s shifter.

Not just the 68RFE, the Aisin works this way also-- after remote start (which I never use because I can't idle up remotely) and then enter the vehicle, gotta press the start button and you're good to go.
