Dirty air filter, but is it really?

I just did an oil change and air filter. Still waiting on diff fluid.

When I replaced my air filter I inspected it. It’s dirty, no doubt. But it also seems that there is a lot of filter media that is still clean and ready to filter.

This is after 20,000 miles.

Nothing wrong with that filter but i personally would let the PCV vent to atmosphere not the filter box that would eliminate alot of that dirt

I just changed mine. Now i feel like a dummy because it didn't look half as bad as that one (12,5k miles). New one was all white media vs yellow. Anyone know why, it was a mopar replacement from Geno's?

The new mopar filter was white.

I am considering installing one of those “filter minder” air filter restriction gauges like come on power stroke engines. Cheap and easy to install, I’ve read pretty good things about them.

Cummins (like industrial Cummins, but Ram Cummins) have a similar item but it’s electronic and the sensor lights up green/yellow/red to indicate. Neat, but pricey and more complex to install.

I thought it was just a Cummins thing from the turbo doing a little extra suckin'. RAM has a good fresh air system on these trucks all around.

Mine at 9,300:20210701_113203.jpg

I replaced it at service time because it's relatively cheap and comes in the Geno's quick service kit for Cummins. Looks like mine had surface crap rather than media deep as well, but again, an air filter every 9-15k on this expensive truck isn't going to break the bank for the peace of mind.

When did they stop putting these on the Cummins?

My 04.5 had one. Never went off green.

My 01 has one same with my 05 they work as they have gone red a couple times over the years, i thought i read somewhere that these trucks would tell you if the filter was plugged by going off the maf reading, i could be thinking of something else though
