Hey guys my truck (Stock 2020 Megacab SO) is currently at the dealer getting some warranty work done. Dealership just called me up confirming that the work would be under warranty except they found a few things to do NOT under warranty. Basic stuff that I knew needed done (air filter, fuel filter, etc) which I do myself however the one that surprised me was the last thing. They want ~$200 for some type of module flash? They claim it helps the truck diagnose all kinds of issues from knock sensing, fuel filter, exhaust particulate, etc, etc....The list was extensive when I asked what the flash was for.

I just wanted to verify with the dudes much smarter than me on these trucks if this is worth it and/or do you guys recommend getting it? Also not sure if it matters but I do have a Ziegler Mopar Extended warranty on the truck for another ~4 years....So if the flash is required to maintain warranty I guess I'm SOL and paying it haha

Thanks!

Sounds like some BS that you have to pay for it. You have a warranty. If something needs fixing it should be covered by that. Interested in hearing from others.

Any kind of flash from the manufacturer should be free. I can’t think of any reason to be charged for one if it’s required. This one doesn’t sound required, you have an extended warranty. I call BS, don’t do it.

This is correct. Flashes are not covered under warranty if the issues of the warranty claim do not fall under what the flash addresses.
But, on the other hand, they could just as easily note that they’re doing the flash due to customer concern for one of the issues the flash addresses.

Not sure how I'd convince them of that. I had the service tech look up what the flash is addressing and it's basically all diagnostic stuff.....in layman's terms it sounds like it's a firmware update that allows the truck to basically catch a bunch of things that it previously wouldn't have flagged as wrong....basically a bunch more things to set the check engine might on.....

Has nobody else's dealership pushed this on them?

What is the flash specifically for? Do you know the revision number?

Told me the same thing when my Uconnect wouldn't do the OTA update. I asked isn't it supposed to do OTA, yes he said. So shouldn't it be free then? No. Go figure

Ask them if the flash is a TSB and if so what is the TSB number. Then look it up and complain about one of the symptoms. Then it should be free. Charging $200 for a flash when the truck is already in the shop is a rip off.

The techs at the dealership can’t just freely flash modules. There has to be a reason, and if they want to get paid by stellantis for performing the flash under warranty, it has to be because of symptoms the customer experiences that the flash addresses.
Otherwise, they’re free to offer flashes as an upsell service.
Or, you can get a J2534 pass through device, aftermarket witech account, tech authority subscription, and flash token, and do the flashes yourself.

I'd decline. Not about the money, $200 is fair, but I just don't feel the need to upgrade the software that they say is better for your truck to diagnose the items you mentioned. It should already be doing that effectively enough.

Thanks guys...like I said this just thru me through a loop because my wife's Honda we have owned since new as well and any time it needs a software push Honda has never tried to charge me for it....
