Dealer numbers are frustrating.

So I’ve been searching for a new truck for a couple of months now and I think I’m ready to pull my hair out. Since the 2019’s are pretty much picked through, I’ve been looking to build a 2020. I’ve found multiple dealers who were giving great price reduction off of new 2020 MSRP. ~15k. But if I was to build the same lvl truck with the options I want which equals the same msrp as the 15k off, I usually get a response of 8k off since it’s being built. I don’t pretend to know or understand the numbers game, but at this point I think I’d rather have my wisdom teeth pulled again rather then try to buy a new truck. I understand profit to run a business, I’m just venting over all the madness.

I have no experience building one. However, I think dealers are more eager to deal on vehicles on their lot since its apart of the active inventory.

I've always wondered if you take more of a hit building versus buying off the lot. Sounds like it.

Not 100% sure if this applies, but if there is a current truck on the lot, there might be extra rebates thrown at it from the manufacturer. Where an ordered truck wouldn't have those "extra" rebates. Plus if a dealer is trying to hit numbers for the month to get extra money from RAM/DODGE, then they might throw some of that money at trucks on the lot since an ordered truck wouldn't count on this month's numbers of trucks being sold, instead it is a future month/date number. Again, just my guess on how this works, someone that works at a dealer might be able to elaborate more.

we had ours built thru Dennis Dillon. Their pricing was the same whether on lot or built.

When I built mine this past summer I checked around at like 12 dealers and they all were slightly different on pricing and trade in.

I did the same. Even had the same dealership build it with different prices. I’m just going to sit back for a while till I find a good deal.

I think Tell1313 has it right with the fact of them wanting to meet the monthly numbers so they want to sell whats on the lot. Also is the 8k including rebates that the 15k may be including? Typically you get the rebates at the time of delivery when you order so they may not be including that in there (however 7k in rebates seems like alot). Lastly, when I ordered mine they gave me invoice minus holdback and said that its actually better because they dont have to essentially pay for a vehicle to sit on the lot.

So I traded in a 2018 3500 Laramie 68rfe, low miles, etc. The dealer that was the cheapest for the build (Coon Rapids Chrysler) taking 100% of the holdback and an additional 500 off the invoice price, but would only give me $46k for my trade in. I shopped that around and Ryan Chrysler in Buffalo, MN, matched the new pricing and gave me $53.5k on my trade in. That's the best I could find. There is a small town old school dealer that still has a BP station and convenience store attached to it that I so desperately wanted to do the order with, but they couldn't come close to the pricing. (A.M. Maus & Son) in Kimball, MN. They have probably the most knowledgable Ram salesman that I have met (Rob Kuechle). If you're in MN I highly suggest you check A.M. Maus out.
