Hi my name is Ryan and I have a 2021 ram 5500 with 163,000 miles on it. The crank pulley just breaks off while I was driving. No signs of anything wrong with it. Dealership is saying after 3 months of sitting that the extended warranty company won't pay for it because they did the bolts failed. I find that hard to believe because they did the bolts were so in the holes and tight. They are wanting $30,000 to fix this. Does any one have any advice for me please? My business went under because of this and it's getting worse.

Did the crank snap off or just the bolts sheared? 30,000$ sounds like they want to put a new engine in it plus about 10 grand in labour?

Sorry, when the crank broke, it hit the motor and put a hole in the block.

Sounds like alot bs. So much for posting for the extended warranty.
Sounds like if warranty won’t cover it I’d take it to an independent shop, a long block plus labor shouldn’t be so high. Depending how everything looks during disassembly you may get away with a short block and it would cost even less.

I’m sorry, I’m struggling to figure out what you’re saying here. I’m assuming some typos, but could you clarify?

Here is my interpretation:

From the sounds if it your crank broke resulting in your crank bolt snapping off. I cant see how shearing the pulley off would break the crank itself. Also, very disappointed to see the warranty will not cover the repair...... assuming truck is 100% stock. How long are the extended warranties good for mileage wise?

I also have a 21 ram 5500 but my harmonic balancer bolts just broke off leveling studs in crank . Engine still runs but shows no oil pressure. The extended warranty was also denied because I did my own oil changes! My advice is never buy extended warranty! The language is always is always aimed at finding a way to deny the service claim! And only to make sure you take vehicle to dealer to pay bloated prices .this has happened to me 2 times with my 5500 and 3 other times with other vehicles!

No more extended warranties. They cover nothing, even less then the manufacturers now. Guessing, like cell phone insurance, as things became more expensive we ended up with useless aftermarket warranties.

Thats illegal for them to deny warranty due to you servicing it unless you don’t have any receipts for your oil/filter purchases.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act was enacted in 1975 and is US federal law. But being the harmonic balancer is outside of the engine they cant say lack of oil changes caused this issue which says that oil change receipts cant be required. This would be a very easy win in small claims court (thats what its called here in Canada not sure what you call it in the US). Also with proof of other failures of the same part as seen in this and other threads shows this is an issue that affects these C&C trucks any lawyer could win this.

What they count on is no one fighting back. On my truck I certainly gave up. For 30K I would look at pursuing legal action. Things need to change. Quality and durability testing and addressing failures needs to improve and the never honored Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act needs to be addressed.

Yea I gave up to because buy the time you pay some crook lawyer 500$ or more just to take the case then after it’s denied you appeal the crook lawyer charges you another 500$ or more it takes mouths maybe year . Then there’s no guarantee you out all the money plus repairs!!! If anyone knows a better way please share!

Usually just threaten with legal action stating the warranty act and they cover it speaking to the higher up guys or owner works best. They hope people are not aware of their rights. If you have to go to court here you can put in the claim that they cover your legal costs if they lose.

So I did threaten legal action, the response was your life time power train warranty plan just covers internal oil lubricated engine and transmission parts like I said they manipulate the wording to deny claim. Somebody please help!

No thats not true at all engine parts internal and external are covered the balancer is not an accessory

I don’t really see why losing your dampener would make you loose oil pressure.. the 2 seem unrelated.
