I have a 19' 3500 Cummins and was looking at going down to a 6.4 with the 4.10s in a 2500 or 3500. I drove a few and really like how the new 8-speed shifts. The 6.4 will get the job done, I have always liked owning a diesel though because of the sound. I really liked driving the power stroke over the cummins. It just performs flawless in my opinion, where the cummins I feel doesn't. To me its the transmission. I hated driving the AISIN and the new 68rfe performs better than the old one, but not to the degree of the new Ford 10-speed. To me Ram is out of date with their transmission pairing with diesels. Anyways, back to the 6.4. I looked at doing an order and spec'ing it out the way I wanted. One dealer in particular offered me an above KBB price on my limited. It would be a Laramie night edition My payment would drop at least 300/month and possibly more depending on rebates that come out in May. Gas has been running significantly cheaper than diesel too.
Thoughts? I feel like I'd miss a diesel.

Personally, I would miss the diesel.......mainly when in hilly country and towing. Biggest loss would be the exhaust brake. My motor home is 38ft and gas......every time I drive the thing, I wish it was a diesel for that reason. 20k on gas and no exhaust brake can get a little exciting in a hurry!

That's understandable. I am not doing any towing like that, no hills, no mountains, etc.

I did what you are thinking of doing. I traded in a 2016 Big Horn 2500 with a Cummins for a 2019 Longhorn 2500 with a 6.4 gasser. The gasser works out better for me as I only pull my fifth wheel 2 or 3 times a year and all other times it is a grocery getter. I really do like the eight speed tranny.

I tow a 26 ft enclosed featherlike trailer every Thursday and Friday. Probably once a month a 20 ft enclosed trailer twice per week in addition. I know the gasser with the 4.10s will work fine. I love the look of the Laramie night black edition, but the interior doesn't compare to my Limited, though I'm kind of anti-chrome.

Sounds like your decision is already made up. Our thoughts don’t matter to be honest.

It’s your money and you have to justify the use and need.

Nothing wrong with the 6.4 and 8 speed

What do you think my decision is then? lol. I dont know what I want to do. I like the idea of having a $300 less per month payment and paying less for fuel, but know the diesel will bring a higher value at the end of the day.

I never buy a new vehicle worrying about the trade in or resale value. I buy something I like....or at least think I like. I am going from a Chevy 3500 diesel dually 4x4 to a Laramie 2500 Hemi short bed. The the 8 ft. bed dually was just more truck than I wanted to drive and park. Plus I am hearing a lot of low mileage diesel drivers, like me, of all brands who are having DEF and emission problems because they don't put enough miles in to use and keep the DEF fresh and the trucks don't get enough miles to go through a regen. My Laramie arrived at the dealer this morning and I'll be picking it up Friday.

Not sure how the 8 speeds are holding up on the 6.4’s but the issues I had on my 14 1500 and 19 1500 made me swear I would never have another 8sp. Put 140k on my 14 mated to a HEMI all highway miles, had it serviced at 120k like the manual said, 20k miles later, failure, told me it was gonna be 5-6k for a new tranny and I said no way, couldn’t get FCA to intercede so I buy a 19 1500 mated to another HEMI, shift points were terrible, constantly lunged and lurched, had it back 2-3 times FCA said nature of the beast, truck wouldn’t tow a 3k lb enclosed trailer......etc. Bought the 2500 CTD with 6speed, so far so good except for the recall issue which will be fixed this coming Monday! Pulls like a tank and averages 17mpg pulling the trailer with 2 Harley touring bikes in it.

I just made the switch. Traded a 2012 Bighorn 2500 CTD tuned and deleted for a '19 Longhorn 6.4L. I haven't towed with the new truck yet but I am beyond impressed with the in town driving.

I have driven a diesel since 2000 I doubt I will ever go back but what suites me may not suite everyone else. But did convert the wife as her SUV is a diesel as well
