I dislike most aftermarket bumpers based on aesthetics and weight. The only aftermarket bumper I like is the AEV one, but it provides very little function over the OEM one so it's hard for me to justify the price and labor to put it on (I will be getting their rear bumper). I decided to chop my OEM one since I had also done this to my 5th gen 1500. The end pieces were already pretty mangled underneath too.
I had long ago removed the air dam which I think gave close to 6" of extra clearance. Chopping the bumper gave me another 6.5" of clearance in front of the tires.
After the cut (I used an angle grinder) I deburred and painted the edges and added some automotive door trim to give it a "finished" look. I'm happy with how it came out.
