Can Ram Flash the 2025 Cummins engine ECM OTA (over the air)? Some people have told me No. And some people have told me yes, they can.
I would think the OTA flashes are for the Radio/Uconnect system only.

What I am asking if Ram can flash the Cummins engine ECM with me driving it down the road and without me knowing about it/without my permission?

OTA programming for the ECM is one of the advertised features for the 25+ Cummins trucks.

It likely can’t happen while you are driving thou.

If it's like our Ford Explorer, it will give you a heads up that there is an update and I believe it says it will schedule it next time it's connected to wifi.

But my Ram I never connected to wifi, so maybe it has some kind of cellular service? I'm not even sure if you can connect to wifi with it.

Coming from an IT background, that sounds like a nightmare scenario. The truck would have to pass a certain amount of checks before that even happens, I would guess. Such as not moving and ability to run a pre-post confirmation of the update. We've all updated PC's and that can be a crap shoot sometimes.

Perhaps any ECM OTA's would be minor in nature (not actual engine tuning/functioning). For those types of changes, wait for the dealership.

Uconnect updates? Who cares...update at will.

techman--Agree 100%! OTA Engine ECM updates---NO, looks like a recipe for disaster. Uconnect updates---Yes, knock yourself out...
(I was just trying to get a "confirmation" on whether or not RAM (or Cummins) can do an engine ECM update over the air)

That's insane. Time to disable the cellular antenna. I noticed in the app it shows every trip you make and I don't see a way to turn that off. It's crazy
Yes..insane. The point is you do NOT want any OTA updates on anything, but radio related. Plus, you do not want anyone to "know every trip you make".

Wow, Thanks for that @Brutal_HO
From your link;
"The issue stemmed from an incomplete version of the Uconnect telematics software that was sent through the Wrangler 4xe’s OTA system. The partial software package caused a communication failure between vehicle systems, effectively bricking the hybrid powertrain module in some cases."

Makes me think of a line from Bill Murray in Caddyshack;

"So we have that to look forward to.....which is Nice". (Not!)

OTA telematics will be the way forward, with everything. Might as well get used to it.

CAT, Deere, and many others have been using telematics for a while now. The guys at my local CAT dealer just shut off a few of their rental machines because the people who rented them out were abusing them on the job site (and not paying their rental fees).

It isn’t going away, and they make it more and more difficult to “deactivate” as time goes on. Personally I think it’s great. Like anything else, there are pros and cons to this. And the execution needs to be constantly perfected so that it’s seamless and very reliable, which will happen. I’d much rather my truck update itself in the parking lot as opposed to me having to schedule an appointment, drive to the dealership, and then spend an hour waiting for someone to plug into it.

I imagine the way to get around it in the future will be aftermarket ECMs. Or piggy back modules

I hope it's better than uConnect updates that have bricked 2 radios of ours.
