Buying aftermarket accessories vs. including them in your order

Just curious about what you guys do when ordering a truck as far as accessories. I would want a bed liner and side steps anyways, so is it just easier to include them in the order so you don't have to mess with them later? Same with a tonneau cover. I figured I will need one eventually anyways and didn't really look at the factory one but I might consider that too, unless I want to go with a roll up design. Or do you sometimes find a better deal if you have the dealer add those things on?

I ordered mine with the bedliner, but didn't like the offered options for steps or cover, so opted to add them later myself.

I personally don't think having a dealer add anything is ever going to be a better deal. In my experience everything a dealership is marked up compared to what you can get it for elsewhere.

The bed package seems like a decent deal with the liner, step, and lights but the side steps for $850 for the black ones do seem pretty expensive. Which steps did you end up getting?

I'm not 100% positive, but I'm pretty positive, that running those bed lights is also a real big pain in the ass.

I got the bed utility group and the factory black cab length steps. Bed group is a good deal IMHO. The steps are pricey but solid and a very nice footing platform. I think they are worth it, especially after having various sets of aftermarket steps. The drivers side step had scratches at delivery and they are replacing both with new. Not sure when they will come in but I am happy with that.

Buy the accessories when ordering truck then they are warranted under truck warranty otherwise only accessory warranty which is sometimes only 30 days. Purchased bed step aftermarket and when it broke after only a year SOL

I ordered mine with the bed group as it seemed like a good deal with the bed liner, lights and step. Probably could have gotten it a little cheaper aftermarket, but then I'd have to run the wiring for the lights and hook up the switches. I'd have to take it and drop it off somewhere for a few days for the bed liner. Step would be an easy install.
I also ordered the bed cover. I have a back flip on my F250 and while its a hard cover, it's heavy and a pain to flip open. Buddy has a RAM with the bed cover and I like it, so easy choice.
I will be removing the sliders (75th Annav package) and installing AMP steps myself. I've installed them on my last 2 trucks so no big deal.

I had the same question when I worked in boating. We bought off the shelf accessories, marked them up to the dealer, who marked them up to the customer. Made no sense to me. Turns out most sales were to people financing as much as possible and didn't have enough cash for all those accessories. Essentially loan sharking them. It wasn't 100% of buyers, but it was the intended demographic.

I've bought a few OEM accessories at the parts desk because I liked the OEM version, but there is usually a just as good alternative for less money.

I'm a fan of getting the accessories from the dealer, if possible when I order or buy the vehicle. Getting the part warranties is a big plus in my book, and the factory look on many accessories is nice too. I had a Mopar lift put on the wife's Jeep and having it under her overall warranty from our dealer is a nice benefit.

I also ordered the bed package..but everything else I ordered myself. Amp powered steps, Duraflaps, bug shield, etc. heard accessories that are added on by offsite venders just slow the build down.

AUX switches are the only thing I would definitely order. The bed package is a big maybe. It is a good deal for what you get. I got my spray-in liner for free and bought my Mobar bed step afterward though.

I ordered the bed package also and the factory running boards.. I put I took the duraflaps and backflip off the old truck.. ordering it with stuff on it is cheaper then having the dealer install it later.. also what ever percentage u get off on the truck is the same percentage your getting off the accessories when u order..

When I ordered I deleted the spray in bed liner as I knew that I wanted the LineX color matched spray in liner. Also went with an after market power tonneau cover (Retrax - PowerTrax). But I did add the upfitter electronic module and the aux switches for possible future use (both would be difficult to add later). Then I got the dealer to throw in the Mopar mud flaps (front and rear installed) and the Mopar all weather mats as part of the deal. I wish I could have told them to keep those Firestone Transuck tires and put on what I wanted.

As far as bed liner and power steps that i did i would for sure order the truck with them. I did not on my first truck and it ended up being more money and a hassle (on the power steps especially) then going factory. The tonneau cover i wanted hard folding and didnt like what the factory had to offer so bought aftermarket . If you dont want power steps then it probably doesnt matter much which way you go but i love how far down they come for my short wife compared to fixed steps. They were $700 cheaper ordering from factory installed then amp research and work great.

Factory steps no there are far better and cheaper options out there bed utility group is a big yes not gonna outfit the bed with a liner and the step and lights for cheaper

I bought the $675 Mopar full length steps for my 2019. Declined the $300 install fee and just put the 6 bolts on myself (new DT bodies are sooo much easier). This go around I bought a $125 set off Amazon and they look and perform the same.

Depends on what the accessory is and how much it costs.

examples

Clearance lamps $95 - yes you can’t beat that

Front two windows tinted $600 - no, you can get a better job and better film somewhere else cheaper
