Folks I hate the rear fuel filter. Its just the most terrible design ever. My hack is to put the wrench inside a contractor bag, do all the work inside the contractor bag, and then fish out my tool and the filter from that bag. its so dumb. Anyway I see black market performance makes a spin on filter for the rear. Any issues anyone can report?

The commonly used Cat fuel filters are inferior to the OEM filtration, so the easier to change filter comes at the price of sacrificing filtration and fuel/water separation.

Any company still using Cat filters for these trucks is clearly relying an Internet hype and/or hasn’t done any filtration rating research. So many better options, and there have been for nearly 20 years.

I empathize with the hate for the brain dead filter design on the rear unit, but running a “CAT” filter is a significant downgrade in filtration for sure.

The OEM stuff is pretty hard to beat for filtration and water separation, at the expense of an idiotic upside down cartridge design that has the potential to make a mess. Take the good with the bad I guess.

Check out this thread.

I wish the placement of the filter housing and its construction material were different, but this simple tool was quick, easy, and cheap to make. It really does allow for changing the filter with zero mess, not even any droplets of diesel on the drive shaft!
