Battery Disconnect issues

I’ve tried searching the forum but have had no luck (I almost never do).

Before almost every procedure remotely relating to power, we are told to “disconnect the negative battery cables”. There must be dozens of settings I’ve accumulated over the three years - seats, radio, mirrors, cameras, etc. Are all of these lost every time you disconnect the batteries? What other issues can arise after disconnecting the battery cables?

A lot of the settings are lost.. However there are small battery packs that can be connected to the OBD port to power the computer so all those setting are not lost when the starting battery is removed. I have one for my NOCO battery pack. It uses an adaptor that connects the NOCO to the OBD port. Probably others out there. This one plugs into the battery pack for power while you change out the starting battery.

When I changed the battery in my '20 2500 6.4 I did not lose any of the owner settings ( phone pairing, presets, seat memory, mirror memory, etc.). Not sure about things like the transmission learn but all of my settings were there. Battery was out about 10 minutes.

Same with me when I replaced the battery. I had the power disconnected for a good hour 'cause that's how long it took me. But I didn't lose any settings. Granted I don't set a lot of stuff, but my radio presets were still their.

I had a local shop put in customer supplied batteries (COSTCO AGMs) a couple months ago and while I don't know how he did it, I didn't loose any settings.

I changed out both of my batteries. They were disconnected for at least 10 or 15 minutes. Don't remember losing any settings.

Thanks guys. That is reassuring. I’m also going to look at CdnHO’S OBD power adapter. However, that would only be useful when changing the battery. I don’t think it would help when you are disconnecting the battery to protect arcing or power to some electronic component you are disconnecting. You might still have power there. I am assuming that’s why they tell you to disconnect the battery before working on them.

I’m hoping most settings are stored in some sort of stable flash memory the retains it’s data even without power.

That is a great question. Not sure what that power adapter provided power to. I assume it is only to some of the vehicle computers. To be safe, I would only limit it to battery replacements.
