Auxiliary Fuel Port

Just got our 2022 Ram 5500 CC Cummins 84CA dual fuel tanks! She is a beast! According to a 2012 and 2014 PDF document I found, there is supposed to be an auxiliary fuel port to which you can connect to refuel other equipment. Anyone know anything about this port? I am going to the dealer next week to ask, but thought someone here may have experience with this. It would be very handy to be able to refuel some of our equipment from the onboard fuel supply instead of taking up space on the bed.

Here is a 2019 upfitter document that mentions it as well. I hi-lited in yellow where it mentions the port.
To my understanding it is simply a “draw straw” so you can use a diesel welder/generator or similar by plumbing it in to the port to allow the welder/generator fuel pump to draw fuel from the tank it should be on the rear tank… to refuel equipment you would have to connect a pump to the port and wait 10-15 years for it to fill the equipment as it is a small line (1/4”-3/8 IIRC)

@Jimmy07 can you confirm?

We have three of these working now. The "straw" out of the tank is a 3/8" HDPE male hose barb/nipple, so we put 3/8" heavy duty fuel line on it with a stainless steel hose clamp. We then run it over to the driver side rear underbody tool box. Don't run it to the rear driver side box! Being above the exhaust pipe, we measured it at 130F in the box. We plumbed it into the box with a cable gland fitting, then into a Seaflow pump (SFGP1-032-003-01). We run 3/8" x 15' of fuel line to a 3/4" Fill-Rite nozzle on a swivel. Just neck it down with a 3/4" MNPT to 3/8" Hose Barb to connect them. We are in the process of adding a Reelcraft Model# B3620 OLP to manage the line instead of having a 15' goat rope stuffed into the box. The reel just fits into the underbody box. Ultimately, you are only going to get 3-4GPM since the connection is only 3/8". For us this is fine, since it only takes 2-3 minutes to refuel a generator. Also, we have a deep cycle battery in the underbody box to power our lift/hoist system, so we just connected the pump to the battery with an On/Off toggle switch in the box for the pump, so you will need to figure out where to get 12VDC power. Hope this helps.

Thanks Scott! My application is for a 8kW diesel heater. We are using it in our truck mounted camper I'll likely only need 1/4" fuel line for this.

I have a 2021 3500 CC and the AUX port on the tank is smooth bore so I can't just clamp some hose on. You didn't need a quick connect similar to the main lines to use the AUX?

Mine came with a quick connect cap but the dealer cannot tell me this size so I can McMaster-Carr it.

I attached some pictures of The port, sender and cap for reference.

That is the same as ours. That cap is just a cap/cover for the port. Just slide a 3/8" fuel line over that nipple. There is one raised rib on it about 2/3 the way down. A 3/8" fuel line will go over that then put a hose clamp on the lower side of the rib. Actually, we put two hose clamps just to be safe. Attached is the Ram description of the port in case you don't have it. I would use 3/8" line. 1/4" is only going to give you 0.37GPM based on a 15' line.

Thanks Scott, I have a 60" CA so I wouldn't be near 14' on the hose but I'll run 3/8" right to the pump to be safe. The fuel pump is sized for 1/4" line so I'm stuck at that for the remainder of the run.

Those little 8kW heaters don't use much fuel.

Thanks for the info!

We've got a 2022 Ram 5500 with the auxiliary fuel tap on the 52 gallon tank, connected to two Webasto units.

What's the lowest fuel level that the rear tank can get to before the heaters won't be able to pull fuel? I didn't see anything about that in the manual.

They likely can pull all the fuel since that is the “secondary” tank

Thanks for the information. i have been looking for how to do this on a 3500 SRW short bed.
