So, I have a 2021 Ram 3500 crew cab long bed. I ordered the truck and was trying to keep weight down so I only wanted the Laramie 1 package. For some reason Ram won’t let you add the factory power steps with the Laramie 1 package. I was fine with that as I have installed AMPs on my previous 2 trucks and my wife’s suburban.

found a deal on the AMPs and ordered them. Went to install them and they were by far the most difficult install of the 4 sets I’ve done. Finally got them installed and inserted the fuse as the last step and they wouldn’t retract. After days of troubleshooting I finally determined they sent me the wrong controller. They ordered it for me and failed to tell me it would be 2-3 months till it arrived.

it finally arrived and I installed it to find out the steps wouldn’t retract all the way and hit the pinch weld. I was fine with it but, it finally retracted past the pinch weld and got stuck. Watched the AMP video on how to adjust the steps where you loosen the lower bolts and bounce on the step to “seat” it all the way. Finished adjusting it as they said and it still would hit the pinch weld and get stuck behind it. Used a grinder to grind down the pinch weld where it was hitting and got it working until I installed the end caps. Don’t know how much more I can grind.

so I’m here seeking help for some tricks on how to get these to function properly befor I take them off and toss them in the trash. Thanks

You have to loosen all 4 bolts and bounce on the step. Then put pressure on them as you tighten the lower 2 bolts, then the top bolts. But you have to do this before you put the rivets in the top of the bracket.
I posted some pictures in my build thread.
Good luck.

Bouncing worked great on my install. Trucks are a little different with regards to the size of the pinch weld they have though.

One side on mine wanted to catch the pinch weld with the cap on as well. Ever so slight of a tap toward the back using a rubber mallet worked for me. But it was frustrating in the meantime.

I'll be installing mine Saturday... let us know how it goes OP!
