All this for an oil leak

Came home from our last camping trip of the season for us, week long adventure. Well while backing in and unhooking pulled out from under the 5'er and parked in the driveway I noticed several oil spots on the driveway each place I stopped. Quick inspection of the truck and to my untrained eye diagnosed a leak from the timing cover. After unloading, quick dinner, dropped the truck off at the local dealer. Call the following morning confirmed my diagnoses as a timing cover leak and covered under warranty. Little did I know at the time it required complete separation of the cab from the frame and a month to repair, again all under warranty. The actually work took four days, getting into the shop so their master mechanic would do the work was the hangup.
Just remember, this was for a timing cover leak, which I found out required pulling the cam shafts to fix, the gasket itself was less than $40, Cummings make a fine motor until you have to turn a wrench. Got the truck back, no issues everything worked, motor purrs like a kitten, no rattles or other noises, and no leaks. Color me impressed. For a loaner I was given a Jeep Grand Cherokee, fully loaded, didn't want to give it back. So I am going to say this was a fine customer experience and if I need another vehicle I will be back.

It's not so much just a timing cover, it's a 2-piece assembly. Timing Cover and Gear Case Housing.

It's the timing gear case housing (backing plate) that requires the camshaft pull if it's leaking from the back side. You cannot remove the gear case housing without pulling the cam.

Sounds like they did ok on you and it was worth the time under the knife. I have to agree it’s a lot but all vehicles are that way now. Pulling the front end apart to replace a bulb is common place now.
