Adding TPMS to a truck that didn't come with it (Chassis Cab, 4500/5500 specifically)

Just a quick thread to document adding TPMS to a truck that never came with it (or TPIS, or tire sensors at all). Specifically this is for a 4500/5500 chassis cab with all aluminum wheels (all 6), and a 2022 in my case. It should work in general, you may need different TPMS sensor part numbers however.

2022 4500/5500 aluminum wheel TPMS sensor part numbers:

Fronts and inner rears: 68475571AD (qty 4)
Outer rears: 68475578AD (they will have an "OD" embossed on the sensor as well, likely indicates outer dual) (qty 2)

Install the sensors and use AlfaOBD to set VehConfig 3: Premium TPM System Present to Yes.

Drive about 5 miles (they say up to 20, but it happened a lot faster for me) and they should auto register.

Side note - I originally only put the sensors in the two rear inner duals as the rest of my wheels were still at powder coat and the truck ignored them completely no matter how far I drove. It appears to need all 6 to be present to do it's thing.

I know none of this is earth shattering news, but almost all if not all of the TPIS/TPMS sensor threads appear to be focused on trucks that came with some sort of tire pressure sensor from the factory. I wanted to post up showing it works even if the truck didn't come with sensors at all originally - exactly as Jimmy07 said it would of course. :D

I just bought a used 2022 5500 Laramie. My Ram app says tire pressure OK but doesn't show any tire pressures in the app. Also I have no tire pressure screen on my information screen. I can't believe this isn't standard on these trucks.

How do I know if I have any sensors without pulling the tires?

I think you can make a safe assumption that it doesn't have TPMS sensors since it's a chassis cab. If you really want to know, you could get a handheld TPMS scanner and check the tires.

You could also use AlfaOBD to enable the feature (which would get you the dash readout at least) and see if the tires show up, but again - really doubt they are in there unless the previous owner was crafty enough to add them.

I don't know that you can tell the difference by looking at the valve stems from the outside.

Looking at the standard features for the 2022 it says that TPIS is standard on Laramie DP's (5500's)

I ordered the AlfaOBD stuff. I know the truck is capable of reading the sensors because it has trailer TPMS. Assuming I don't have any sensors those are all I'd need to add along with the AlfaOBD tool to get my PSU page on my instrument cluster?

It’s a separate system for truck and trailer TPMS, and separate receivers (the truck one is built in, trailer is a separate pair of modules). I was under the same impression about TPIS but what I found on my 2022 limited 4500 was nothing for the truck, not even TPIS was enabled in the computer and no sensors.

AlfaOBD, the security bypass cable to make it work and the appropriate sensors are all you need for the truck tires. I put the part numbers for all aluminum wheels above. If you have steel inners there may be a different part number for those, I didn’t look that up.

That's interesting. According to Ram TPIS should have been standard on the 2022 Limited as well.

Yep. Maybe it got nixed by the bean counters, but I am not convinced it ever came on any of the chassis cabs despite the mentions.

I'm not sure how Ram hasn't been sued over this. They still clearly state that it's standard equipment on 2022 Laramie and Limited 4500/5500's. I'll have to figure out my sensors. I think I have steel inner wheels. Also the outer sensors you the listed are now discontinued.

Someone with a Tech Authority subscription could work it out for you as well as if there is a new part number for the outers. I don't have an active one at the moment unfortunately.

There's a disclaimer on all of their documents that says that specifications, features, and options are subject to change without notice. 2022 was the year that almost every truck delivered missing something, due to parts shortages.

You'd think anything missing should be listed on the window sticker.

I got my TPMS sensors installed today on my 2022 5500 Laramie. And just like gprguy my truck learned them in about 5 miles. Here's the parts list for steel inners and aluminum inners:

Parts for trucks with steel inners:
68475571AD x 2 Front
68475578AD x 2 Outer Dual
68475577AD x 2 Inner Dual (Steel)

Parts for trucks with all aluminum wheels:
68475571AD x 4 Front and Inner Dual
68475578AD x 2 Outer Dual

Thanks gprguy for taking the time to put this thread together!

Resurrecting an old thread. Was able to get the TMPS screen to appear after programming it on my ‘22 5500 Tradesman. Hoping if I add the sensors to the wheels all will be good! Thanks to the OP for the parts info!

Oh hey I recognize that rig in your profile pic. :D

FWIW my truck TPMS sensors were rock solid for about 9 months.. Recently, they've gotten flaky. I'd attribute it to the additional metal I've added to the bed but the front ones come and go as well. Just seems random, they drop out and then come back.

I have yet to figure out exactly why, I did pick up an Autel TPMS tool to try to do some further diagnosis...

I have a 2025 5500 I dont think I have TMPS installed in the tires and wonder if I did can I activate it as well. How would I know for sure.

You can activate the feature with AlfaOBD (and probably J-Scan) - the truck TPMS is built in to the truck's main communication hub. You would have to install TPMS valve stems however. See the first post for part numbers.

I think I have AL rims now if I go to 20inch to get better tire selection down the road should I just get the metal rim part numbers. i.e. does one transmit stronger than another, why the difference
