Add Digital Rear View Mirror and Front Camera (not surround view)

I am going to pick up my new 2023 3500 Limited Cab and Chassis next week and found out that it doesn't have a couple options that i was hoping for. I was hoping for the digital rear view mirror and the surround view camera. However, the main reason i wanted the surround view camera was for the front camera for parking. I have seen lots of threads with instructions for adding the digital rear view mirror by ordering it, and replacing the CHMSL with the one that has the cargo cam and the rear view cam. That seems relatively straight forward and would get me the DRVM without losing the cargo cam.

My questions is, can i get the DRVM with 2 inputs and add the front grill camera and link to the second input on the mirror? I understand they are both digital, unlike the cargo cam that is analog, but not sure if the front camera needs to go through a module to operate or if it could be direct connected to the mirror and allow me to select the input when i need to see forward view.

I don't relly want to use an aftermarket camera with an input switch button like i have seen, unless i need to.

thoughts?

The front cameras and all the surround cameras are designed to display through UConnect not the DRVM.

I don’t think you have options here.

I've been reading more and more about these camera systems and the mix of analog and digital that creates a real mess. I'm wondering if anyone can chime in on the following idea i had:

I would like front view camera and it would be great if it was the OEM camera. I would also like to eventually add surround view once more 2023 mirrors are available on the used market. I would also like digital rear view mirror and the cargo camera.

So, my truck is the Limited cab and chassis truck so the surround view system would actually be 270 degrees and does not include the image from the backup camera, if it had been available (due to restrictions). I assume this is due to the fact that the backup camera could be placed 8 feet from the cab or 12 feet from the cab depending on what type of service body is installed on the chassis and likely doesn't calibrate well. On the surround view image for a cab and chassis, it simply shows black on the wedge at the back of the truck but still shows the separate image for the backup camera. My first thought is that maybe this backup camera is analog and goes into the uconnect as such meaning that if i add the surround view, i can just leave this camera in and not have to switch it to the digital version.

Assuming this is the case, is it possible to add the surround view processing module and only connect the oem front camera to it at this time? Would the side views just show black but it would show me the front camera when i chose surround view? I can add the side views later. Assuming this is true, could i then add the CHMSL with both the rear view camera and the cargo camera since my understanding is the cargo camera would then connect through the surround view processor and the DRV camera would connect to the DRVM that i would also purchase.

This seems like it should work and save me the money of purchasing the side mirrors at the moment and allow me to stay OEM on most items except maybe some wiring.

All four surround view camera are the same part number, and they are digital. The overhead image will not display until all 4 cameras are successfully calibrated to the CVPM. That’s how they set up a chassis cab at the factory- they calibrate all cameras, then disconnect the rear camera.

So to do what i am suggesting, i would need all 4 cameras, in their precise position to calibrate it and then unplug the ones i don't need?

if that's the case, can i add an aftermarket front camera via the analog Aux input on the uconnect (as i've read 33 pages about) and still install the digital rear view mirror with cargo camera or do i run into the same problem using the oem 3rd brake light with the two cameras where the cargo camera is digital and needs to run through the surround processor?

You can use an aftermarket camera and use the aux for it.
There is also a CHMSL that has both the DRVM camera and analog cargo camera.
In that situation, you need to configure the BCM for the aux trailer cameras, and there can’t be a cargo camera soft key (configuration conflict because the analog cargo camera and aux 1 share the same input on the radio).

But can i input both an aftermarket front camera and the analog cargo camera from the CHMSL? Would they both just show up as Aux trailer inputs or do i need to do one or the other? I would also still have the regular backup camera and the digital rear view camera (assuming i get the CHMSL with analog and digital cameras)?

Yes, you can do both aftermarket front camera and analog CHMSL. You would configure the BCM as having the aux trailer cameras so that the AUX 1 and AUX 2 camera soft keys show up in the radio. Those soft keys are how you would bring up the aftermarket front camera and cargo camera.
You’ll still have the other cameras

On a slightly different note…. I have a 2023 3500 Limited with the tow technology group and the DRVM 3.0.
Do I have to enable something to get different camera views in the rear view mirror Like the one in the pic attached.D7132277-0666-4A48-B59F-5976A4B3BFDD.jpeg

It may be better to move this out to it's own thread... but I'll attempt to answer.

The only way to get the view that's in the picture is if you have the tow mode camera. Here's a picture of the DRVM 3.0 without the additional trailer camera.

I wish I could have gotten the tow mode camera I ordered, but I've found even just having the side cameras is really nice. Having those cameras out toward the edge of the side view mirrors really makes a difference.

Here's a youtube video that shows the DRVM 3.0 in operation. Jump to 5:30, that's when they start playing with the mirror.

P.S. - Any post about the tow mode camera wouldn't be complete without me mentioning: if anyone has the 2023 tow mode camera system they're not using, I'll gladly buy it off of you.

Ok that makes sense. I was lucky enough to have got the tow mode camera even though they supposedly "removed" it from my order back in January because they didn't have any for the 2023's..

I actually have the trailer 360 camera set and a tow mode camera set brand new in packaging for sale if anyone is interested. sold truck and never used them. I absolutely lived the digital rear view mirror best add on ever.

also I don't know for sure but you may be able.to multiplex the camera feeds and view it where ever you want. I don't know for sure but there is always a way if you know your way around electronics.

Out of curiosity what do you want for the 360...

if you have surround view 360 on the truck you should be able to plug it into the bumper and it pops up on the camera page. as long as everything was installed right by ram you should be able to see the cameras at least that's how it was on thw 22s

Not all ‘22’s. About midway thru the year the trailer surround view menu was replaced with aux 1 and aux 2. I don’t recall when, but it was after my truck was built in May of ‘22.

There is an AlfaOBD workaround thou.
