It may not be as efficient, but the cooling system design is mostly to blame. Wife's 2024 Audi RS6 and my 2015 BMW M4 blow freezing temps - the Audi uses R1234yf, but the BMW uses the same R134a that we have and I often find myself turning the temp up a little. It's mostly a design issue, unfortunately.
My understanding is 1234y eco junk is only used in trucks built in USA an Canada, trucks built in MX get to use 134a just like my 06 did
