6.4 Oil Consumption, puff of smoke at start up only...

So, 2500 is 7 months old, only about 2,700 miles on it (very short trip to work) and I noticed today a quick burp of blue smoke at start-up, just literally until the truck was running. Never noticed it before, but honestly I start it from inside the house most of the time, just happened to be walking right at it today. I have read where oil consumption is normal in the owner's manual during break in. I checked the oil, it still looks good from a color perspective and is just above the "add" arrow, so maybe could use a quart to get it halfway or more in the "XXXXXX" area. The pipe is pretty clean, maybe a bit of haze to it, but not much at all, like not wet w/oil or something.I did drive it a bit until it was warm and then rev'd it a few times and didn't see anything. Just wondering if it was something related to the Hemi and break in/residual whatever from a cold start, not letting it really warm up before shut off and then starting it again a few hours later. I do have the chirp everyone talks about, but chalked that up to normal based on all the forums and replies from folks.

Thanks for any help/thoughts...figured I would post here before the Gen Discussion to see if any die hard hemi engine SMEs monitor...

Pretty sure that is a common issue for the hemi. As far as it being a harbinger of badness, I’m not sure.

Squatch,

Thanks for the comment, I have seen some forums and info out there about it on both sides. I have now been watching like a hawk and nothing since.

Mar/RamCares,

Thanks for the note, I may monitor and see what happens and if it stays as is, I may wait until the first oil change and ask/address w/my local dealer (well, the only one in WY...)

Hello How is your situation with puff of smoke ? I have a 2019 2500 crew , 6.4 Hemi with 9900 miles. Every once in a while when I start it it will have a very short tick. Then sometimes every once in a while it will do the same as yours puff of blue smoke. How has yours been ?? I have done several oil changes using Mopar or Napa gold filter and Penzoil or Castrol 0W40 synthetic oil. It hasn’t used any oil between changes.

Hello Mark I have similar situation with my 2019 Ram 2500 crew 6.4 Hemi.

Same with mine. Every once in a while I get a puff of smoke. Sometimes it rattles a little (ticks?) on startup but it goes away very fast. Motor seems perfectly healthy.

I am beginning to see and understand the quirks of my truck. I have about 800 miles on it and on cold starts it definitely has the exhaust noise(tick if you will) but that goes away after some idle time. Maybe a minute or so into running the tone changes and that noise goes away and the idle seems to smooth out, almost like a cold enrichment or something of the sort. I don't like the way it sounds but it also isn't really concerning. I haven't noticed any smoke and the oil is consistent on the stick so that's good. Just figured I would add my few pennies worth to this.

With all due respect, there are people with legitimate problems out there and I’m not sure they’re getting the help they deserve. My truck is fine, thank you.

So far, no issues…it ticks a bit, but I have read that is pretty common with the 6.4. So far no concerns…only have about 7,600 miles in her though…

I just finished the last of 3 round trips to Tampa FL, back to back, roughly 2000 miles total. Oil is still on the full mark.

I had the big puff of smoke on start up today on my brand new 2022 2500 big horn -370 miles on it. not sure if I should be concerned or not?? had it for less than a week.

I’ve noticed that once on my truck. Just so happened to catch it in the mirror a big puff of smoke. I looked for it for a while after that and never caught it happening again. I monitor my oil level and I haven’t lost a drop over my oil life (current OCI) Just my experience

Hello I religiously do my oil changes every 3500- 4000 miles. The system is about 1/2 quart low or less at this point. I still get that puff of blue smoke but it’s not a regular thing. One member indicated if he starts truck and moves it several feet or so then shuts off the next day it might show that puff of smoke. The engine has tight tolerance and to me breaks oil down more rapidly in my opinion. My AC is cool but not cold and has to be run at high fan speed constant on the hot and humid days we’ve been getting. It has been to the dealer but they say there’s no problem. I do still get the one to two seconds tick non frequent. My 2019 only has 18,300 miles.

There is a huge thread here about the 2019 AC TSB

I've never had any puff of smoke, nor any oil consumption via the dipstick. I have however had a couple times a startup tick that goes away very quickly like Rockcrawlerdude.
