Test drove a 23 3500 HO/aisin and while at a slow cruise, if punched the pedal it seem to have lag/delay in power. Is this normal for these trans to have a slight pause because it is anticipating a load or is this possible due to a problem?

Keep in mind that a test drive of a brand new truck doesn’t always give the best impression. The engine needs some time to break in and the transmission needs time to learn. That said, these trucks aren’t known (or designed) to be performance vehicles. Both of my HO trucks are incredibly impressive for what they are. Far more so than their SO counterparts. They really shine when you get some weight behind them.

It's gawd awful laggy "dead pedal" especially if you didn't have it in tow haul.

If you really have to have it more snappy, there's always a Banks Pedal Monster. Not a tuner, just alters the DBW performance.

That said, @mbarber84 is mostly right. Trans learn really needs to happen. However, not really a "break in" for the Cummins, but more of a "finishing" where it will pick up a little performance along the way. Some claim there's code that holds it back for the first 8K. IMHO, jury is still out on that.

Could be worse and you experience "brake throttle death lag" (BTDL) like my Audi has where you jump out into an intersection, brake it, and then find the pedal is COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY DEAD TO THE WORLD (yes, I'm shouting). Nearly got t-boned a few times before learning to drive around it and stop 2 footing it. (damn lawyers).

Sorry should’ve clarified the “finishing”.
Truck runs better the more you use it, especially if you have it under load for a while. I’ve often wondered about the “de-tune” programming but have no way to prove it one way or the other. As you said …jury is still out on that topic.

I own Both dually 3.73 and I hate the HO in almost every way. It does have air suspension which I think is some of the reason I hate it over the SO.
HO is rough, jerky, not enjoyable to daily or tow in my opinion. The SO without air does almost everything better but will not tow quite as much weight or accelerate as fast only while under load.
