3500 gas vs diesel resale value

Back on the fence about the diesel. Good reason is the additional $9500 and diesel prices. (In NY). Main reason is if I wanted to trade in or sell in 3 or 4 years what will I be in for if I got the gas 3500? Would it be hard to sell?

Getting a 5th wheel could be between 12000 and 14000 pounds. And will travel the mountainous upstate NY and PA.

Looking to order in next few weeks.
 
If you are towing that heavy I’d only consider the diesel. Diesel will always have higher resale too
 
Honestly dude, it's really hard to predict. Certainly the resale value on the diesel is going to be higher, but there are so many factors at play. Maybe the best way to inform yourself is to compare asking prices of brand new diesel and gas trucks, then go to Carmax and compare asking prices of similarly equipped trucks that are three or four years old. That should give you a very rough idea of depreciation.

BUT, towing what you're towing, and where you're towing it, I'd just get the diesel. Such a better experience.
 
Right now a cummins ram in laramie trim holds the best resale value.. and resale on a 3500 is a lil better then a 2500.. it use to be the opposite. Like said above it's all subject to change..

Agreed. I tow in hilly terrain also (Ozark Mts) and it is the reason I went back to diesel. If you want a laid back, relaxed towing experience in that terrain, get the Cummins. Fuel is more expensive, but you'll get 20-25% better mileage, so that makes up for a lot of it.
 
Resale is an educated guess at best. The real math is towing 13000 lbs + mountains = diesel.
 
Not many people getting into 3500's are going to want a gas engine, I think your resale value will take a big hit. I'd never buy one personally but that's me.

Two things to consider which is favorable to the gas argument and might help with resale for the right buyer:-

1) those folks who have a job which entails lots of short trips around town, with not enough driving for each trip to get the diesel up to operating temperature. Eg landscape gardeners, all sorts of tradesmen etc.

I see a lot of gas powered 3/4 and 1 ton trucks loaded up and pulling heavy bumper pull trailers every day in St. Louis.

2) payload - you will get a huge bump in payload with a gas engine. So you can carry a lot more bags of concrete etc in the bed of a gas truck compared to the same truck with a diesel.

Just get what you want. The difference is not worth the worry. The resale value argument goes along with the fuel cost vs. MPG and maintainence cost vs. interval discussions - it is typically a wash... I have never had the need for a diesel truck before, but sounds like you might.

We are on our 4th camper. The current 5th wheel is 12-13k lbs and my 6.4/4.10 2500 Ram pulls it great up and down the coast. This is my 3rd gas 3/4 ton truck. I have a diesel 3500 on order with eyes down the road. I am old enough that retirement suddenly seems real and am getting ready for longer camping trips that involve going over the mountain :) A diesel truck will make that easer in a couple of ways - the ease of towing and the ability to add an aux fuel tank (fewer stops). I understand that a 1-ton diesel will be a "bit much" for a daily driver, but I am ready for that am already planning a trip to Wyoming! I can tell you all about payload and towing capacities, but resale value never entered my mind.

Do not buy a gas truck from ANY brand towing that much weight in the mountains with any sort of regularity. You'll want to punch yourself in the face.

I daily drive my 3500 HO and have no issues with the ride/feel or anything like that. It rides better than me 2500 Gasser did by a wide margin IMO when you have tire pressures correct. For the OP I think diesel makes most sense but dont let me spend your money haha
 
Decision made. Actually just ordered an hour ago. Went for the diesel. Another thing that put me on the fence again was watching in the last week diesel prices around here skyrocket. Now around $2.30 a gallon more than gas. But not letting that bother me. I thing I made the right decision. Thank you all for the last minute inspiration.

By the time the truck gets here fuel prices may be back to normal.....

Resale may take a hit but unless you buy it at the no charge diesel time your purchase will be cheaper with the gasser so it negates that

Wow, $2.30 a gallon more than regular? It's only about $1 a gallon difference here in NW Arkansas (which is still way too much!). Where are you located?

Congrats on getting the order placed.
 
Congrats on the order! Man, your fuel prices are nuts! Our diesel is about 60 to 80 cents more than gas
