Following up from our purchase of a 2023 Arctic Fox 1150.
2022 RAM 3500 DRW HO, air suspension
Drove up to Idaho Falls to pick it up after Thanksgiving and back to Central Texas.
3500 DRW Cummins did a fantastic job. As expected. No sweat! Thing is a beast!!!
Dry weight is supposedly 3900 on the AF, our payload is a little over 5000 on the RAM.
With full fuel and water, we tipped over 14k at the Cats Scales by about 700lbs @ 14,700.
We are still trying to figure out what “fully loaded” will be for us, clothes, food, solar upgrades, various tools and equipment, but know very well we will be over 14k.
That being said, though very comfortable in that overage at this moment, we are kicking around the idea of a chassis 4500/ 5500. Purely for piece of mind. The frame on the 5500 is beast!
There are trade offs there, one of which is insurance. From my understanding a +14k classifies as a commercial vehicle, and you will need commercial insurance $. (Someone call it out of f that isn’t true)
Ironically, pricing out a 2023 5500 optioned out similarly to my Laramie 3500 would be about the same. But then you get into flat beds (sherpteks are dope), possible suspension upgrades, super singles, and the investment gets pricier.
We have committed to the 3500 and the AF 1150 for at least a year before making any decisions. I believe we won’t be “legal”, but truck will do just fine. (Original plan was to buy a 5th wheel).
Rambling, but imo, diesel all day.
If I purchased a diesel with a 4k lb truck camper in mind vs 5th wheel, I would have gone 4500/ 5500 without question.
