3.42 vs 3.73.....if you had your druthers for your 2500 Cummins pulling your 5'r, which one would you rather have?

My reason for asking is, maybe going to trade my 2020 Ram for a 2020 GMC with Duramax with Allison 10 speed but it has 3.42 gearing.

Thanks

My 2016 3500 had 3.42's and I really didn't care for them pulling my 15K fifth wheel. My '07 had 3.54's and they were better IMHO. New one will have 3.73's so I am happy except for the small hit on fuel mileage.

Looking at the gear ratios of the transmissions, I'd say it doesn't matter. The Allison starts with higher ratios in the low gears and has more overdrive options in the high gears.

Aisin Six-Speed AS69RC (RAM HD)

  • Sixth gear: 0.63
  • Reverse: 3.54
Aisin Six-Speed AS68RC (RAM HD, HO & Cab and Chassis)
  • First gear: 3.74
  • Second gear: 2.00
  • Third gear: 1.34
  • Fourth gear: 1.00
  • Fifth gear: 0.77
  • Sixth gear: 0.63
  • Reverse: 3.54
Allison 1000 (Chevrolet and GMC)
  • First gear: 4.54
  • Second gear: 2.86
  • Third gear: 2.06
  • Fourth gear: 1.72
  • Fifth gear: 1.48
  • Sixth gear: 1.26
  • Seventh Gear: 1.00
  • Eighth Gear: 0.85
  • Nineth Gear: 0.68
  • Tenth Gear 0.63
  • Reverse: 4.54

I can only compare Rams, but I much prefer the 3.73's over the previous 3.42's
