Hi all! Link for audio of the issue:

Over the last couple days my truck has been doing this knocking rattling sound on cold starts. The engine will fire up and run quietly for about 15 seconds, then start making the noise in the video for about 30 seconds to a minute, then go back to running normally. It is only on cold starts after the truck has been sitting for a couple hours.

Every now and then, I'll get a bit of a tick on cold starts from what I assume is the lifters building oil pressure. This is not the same sound.

Granted this is my first gasoline Ram, but my gearhead brain is telling me this isn't normal. Yet, oil pressures are what they've always been. Never gone beyond 4000 miles before changing with PuP oil and WIX filters. Bought it brand new about 10 months ago and have a little over 15k miles now. I do plan on going to the dealer soon since it's still under warranty, I'm more worried about how long this repair could potentially be.

I thought maybe it could be a loose or broken exhaust manifold, but I've never heard one sound so "mechanical" like this one is, and from what I can tell on visual inspection everything looks fine. No rust, nothing loose, etc.

This below thread on Ram Forum has me worried I might be needing a new motor. The possibility of having this truck down for as long as some people have said, makes me a bit nervous.

Anyone have any input?

That’s my thread, I ended up getting a whole new motor. Broke down on the side of the road with my camper after ONLY the lifters were changed. They wanted to go in twice and I said no way. While I did have a loaner the whole time their service department was less than stellar. Long story short, it was bought back and I bought my Cummins, glad I did. If yours sounds like mine did it is most definitely not normal. Take it back to the dealership and push to get it corrected. Document everything, day, time and people you talk to. Get @RamCares involved. It was an 8 month ordeal for me. Good luck. Stay vigilant.

I went on a similar path my 2014 6.4L. It turned out that a sub-supplier to the engine maker messed up a batch of wrist pins. They were undersized and after a short number of miles the engines started to clatter like wore out Detroit.

My engine was replaced but it only took a month from the time I left it with them for diagnostics to when I picked it up after the repair was completed. I even gave my dealer a copy of a TSB I found that was for this very thing.

How difficult was it to get a loaner? None of the dealers within three hours of me claim to offer loaners. I can get by for a week or so on my own since that's what it seems like they need for an official diagnosis, but anything beyond that I'd need something with a goose ball at minimum. That might have to be a RamCares thing if it comes to it

We're sorry to hear of this @DampLemonade. Should you choose to visit the dealer regarding this concern, feel free to send our team a private message for an extra layer of assistance.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but finally I've gotten some closure. Mostly just posting this for anyone who might stumble on this in the future.

After some back-and-forth and very minimal, manageable drama with some local dealerships, they eventually discovered some "internal parts of the exhaust system" had broken which was causing the rattle. All replaced under warranty. The rep told me it wasn't super common with this generation, but I wasn't the only one either. Kinda interesting it never threw any emissions codes, but I'm just happy to get a quiet truck back

Anything specific you can elaborate on? Was it maybe the muffler, cats, manifoilds?

They said broken baffles in the muffler, but my invoice had parts for both the cats and the muffler.

How many miles did you have/how old was the truck? Seems like that shouldn't have happened on such a new truck anyway.
Manufactured in Feb 2024, I purchased Sept 2024 with 9 miles on it, rattle started July 2025 with around 15,500 miles, currently sitting at 17,000 miles

It was 2024 so say about 74k miles when I fixed it.

I bought the truck in 2022 with 73k miles on it. Not long after I got it I noticed it would rattle some when the MDS was on and at around 1700 rpms.

Once I welded it that rattle that I thought was pinging went away completely.
