I have a 22 Tradesman with HO and 4:10, what would I lose in capacity if I trade for a 21 Laramie with HO and 3:73 gear? Both are CC 4x4 with Aisin.

My '22 HO 3.73 limited has a trailer tow cap of 32,600, I found a very similar 4.10 truck and the trailer tow cap was only about 2000 lbs more

This is my 22 DRW HO Limited Longhorn with the 3.73 rear axle. I would assume, with a tradesman trim level, the numbers represented would be a little higher than mine due to the reduction in options and other “goodies”. The difference would be minimal. There is only a 1,400 lb difference in the GCWR.

Crew...regular cab was 37k

That seems high.

Max GCWR for the 3500 is 43K.

The way max tow is calculated you subtract curb weight, 300lbs for driver/passenger, 100lbs for accessories/gear, and 70 lbs for the hitch.

If the tow rating was 35,200 that means the curb weight was 7,330 which is what a CC DRW Hemi is.

I’ve got 2022 tow charts saved from when they were released. 43K is the max GCWR I’ve seen on CC trucks. 4x2 reg cabs did get a 45K GCWR, which equates to a 37K tow rating.

The vin lookup tool is down, but it never showed GCWR.

Keep in mind those max tow ratings are with a lighter pin weight gooseneck.

Yes, 15%.

But even with that, it’s easy to see how they calculate it.

It does show why it’s so hard to reach max tow ratings in the real world thou.

They certainly walk a fine line when they do the SAE J2807 testing to determine GCWR/TWR. AFAIK, payload isn't a limiting metric for the tests. But holding the GCWR @ max on a hill is, so it would seem a sufficient amount of weight HAS to be placed on the rear axle - dependent of course on the unloaded rear axle weight - to keep it planted. They also have to pass an understeer test. I watched one of the TFL vids with them going through it with Ram and seem to recall one where the truck did slide a tiny bit but didn't exceed the spec.
