I am thinking about ordering a 2500 with Cummins. I do some hour jaunts for work and other times drive 10 minutes. Want a 3/4 ton for increased payload and ability to tow a travel trailer/5th wheel in the future. I also go to the mountains a few times a year and would like to be able drive further distances than we are now. Yes, overkill for now but wanting to grow into it and want a megacab for travels. Thoughts from anyone? Thank you!

Been lots of discussions about truly how good the 2500 towing capacity is vs the 3500. I would put in some specifics about your trailer, weights, etc. lots of really smart people here, many have learned the hard way that the 2500s aren’t necessarily up for their needs. Best to sort that now and be comfortable with your choice.

Agree with the above. If you plan on getting a 5th wheel of decent size in the future and plan to tow it with this truck toss a 3500 into your consideration. Price difference is minimal and worth it if you will need capacity in the future. The 2500 is more capable then the sticker payload but IMO the leafs tow better then the coils on the 2500. Just my $.02

Agree with above. If you have a family and are trying to future proof for a mid to larger size RV, get the 3500SRW. It will keep you legal a lot further into RV towing than a 2500. I got a 2500 because I knew I would not push it beyond it's spec'd capacity. The 2500 is capable of pulling a lot more than it's 10K govt imposed limit, but you can get into a legal mess if involved in an accident, etc.

As far as the diesel for a commuter, I guess I'll have to leave that to others as I don't commute with mine.

I agree with what everyone has said about the 3500 SRW, and if you get the auto-level it will ride better empty or loaded than most 2500’s on the road.

Even with our smaller 5th wheel we have no problems approaching the 7K RAWR or 12,300 GVWR depending on how long of a camping trip we’re packed for and how much firewood is in the bed. Our 5th wheel only has a 1800 lbs pin weight empty, but that grows fast when packed for a long weekend off grid. Even with an empty bed and empty 5th wheel the RAW is 5,750.

If you really want more range while traveling then get the long bed with the 50 gallon tank, instead of the mega cab. You’ll also prefer the long bed for 5th wheel towing over the short bed, thou many people still tow 5th wheels with short beds.

For short drives in colder weather use the winter front and a block heater on a timer for 90 minutes before you leave. This will help the Cummins warm up faster and be better for it and the emissions system. Don’t get into the habit of remote start and idling to warm up, that’s not good for the motor or emission system.
