I recently ordered a 2020 Ram 2500 Laramie crew cab short bed 4X4 6.4L 3.73 gears and have pretty much matched up the Palomina Puma Unleashed 382ths for the hitch weight (1900) and GVRW weight (13900). Was wondering what other matchups are out there. I want to have a good experience without compromising intergrity of the vehicle.

That hitch weight has got to be unloaded. 5er hitch weight will be 20-25% of the gvwr, so you're looking at 2700-3400 loaded. What's your max payload?

Payload is 2980 based on the website. Haven't got the truck yet to see the door sticker. Dry weight is 10218 with all tanks full which should never be, acessories such as food and clothing and my UTV will make loaded weight of approximately 13330. Everything I have read on the toy haulers says that with the garage in the back it affect GVW but affects hitch weight very little.

The 'toy' weight in the back will actually lighten your hitch weight a tad. In my case it doesn't matter much with the new 3500 DRW CC, BUT it DID on my old 1500 Bighorn CC with the short bed.

All that $$$ you think you are saving on maint. will be going straight into the gas tank ya know, right?:rolleyes:

Although I will say, that HEMI will sound pretty sweet turning 5000 RPM on every hill!

I guess you don't know what 6.4L means???????????? Sorry, I couldn't resist! :p

Read it late at night. Must have missed the “6.4”!

With the cost of fuel vs the cost of diesel + initial cost of the engine you’d have to put an awful lot of miles on before the Hemi is going to cost more than the Cummins.

Even if you assume that diesel and gas cost the same (let’s say $2.50/gal), if the Hemi gets 10mpg towing and the Cummins gets 12mpg (both about the averages I see reported on this site) it would take 250000 miles to break even.

10 mpg towing with the Hemi... is he only going downhill with a tailwind?

I get 10-11 mpg at 75 mph all day long. The only exception has been climbing in the Rockies and a day with brutal headwinds across Wyoming.

Crossing above 80 really hits it hard though.

Conversely, if I keep it at 65 I can pull 12-13 out of it.

My thought exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm getting 10-11 with HO pulling 13K 5'er and 4k enclosed behind it. Maybe they get 10 pulling 5K trailer? MAYBE!!!!!!

When not towing at elevation. The new BGE is a very good option to the Cummins. For loads under 12k and under 3k elevation...you will find the gap has closed between Diesel and Gas in the RAM world.

For long pulls and elevation I can not deny the Cummins relevance...but here on the east side of the Map it is no longer king when all factors are considered.

I love my 6.4l HEMI compared to my 6.7l Cummins.

BUT, if i was towing in a different place or over 12k...i would flip that story.

My Airstream tips the scales at a hair under 9k, and additional load in the truck is a little over 1k. So I’m dragging 10k with me everywhere I go.

The 8 speed makes the Hemi a pretty damn good tow vehicle.

Hearing you’re getting 10-11 with the HO Cummins (though towing heavier than I am) makes me sad that it doesn’t get better mileage, but happy that I made the right choice for me.

I would love to know what you gross at, maybe 17-18k? I'm over 26 so I guess that extra amount is what kills the BGE ( I think I know what that means ;)!) I
will say, I drove a 2500 Hemi when I first started looking and was totally impressed with it, just wouldn't work for what I was setting up to do. (this is our retirement rig)
The 8 speed is a huge improvement for sure!!!!!!! It must be a missile in a PW! And I guess you could always "HELLCAT" it!

Am going on pretty long trip next week to middle of nowhere UT, so will try driving 65 and see what that does to MPG.

I‘d guesstimate the same gross. I need to get the whole thing on a scale to verify though. It’s pretty quick when unloaded. I’d love to put some force’s induction on this thing, but I hear the Hemi doesn’t take well to it without a lot of strengthening. If I were towing heavier I’d have gone with the Cummins no doubt. Since I didn’t need the extra capacity thoug, and since it’s our only vehicle (we’re fulltimers) I wanted to have the slightly better ride and less weight.

We’re currently in the Middle of Nowhere, UT, doing 65mph (The wife is driving, I swear!).

One of my problems, ( or maybe a blessing, not sure which) my wife can't and won't drive ours! I keep telling her that there's nothing to it!

i have a 2019 ram 2500 crew cab 4x4 with the 6.4 and 8speed.i pull a 2019 cherokee wolf pack 25 pack 12 with my full dresser harley in it and it does a pretty good job,my fuel mileage is around 7mpg at 65mph.my trailer weighs around 8700 empty so add 950 for the bike.sure a diesel would pull better but for the upfront cost of the diesel engine, the def fluid cost, higher cost of fuel and mine is a daily driver i just couldnt justify it for a truck i'd tow with less than 10 times a year.
