2017 C.H.O. minimal def usage Q's

Mine does same. I have a 35” fifth wheel that’s roughly 15000lbs. When I took it to Florida and back I nearly used any def. Reason being (I’m told) is that truck under load is burning all the fuel and getting hot enough to keep itself clean. Def is for cold engine and when fuel is not fully burned so it gets in there and heats up and fires up and other fary **** to pass emotions. That said, as long as you are consuming def after working the truck you are good to go.

You haven't been given very good information. Bottom line is the harder you work the truck the more DEF you use, this is because there is lower EGR flow at higher engine loads so all of the NOx has to be controlled with DEF. When towing I burn double the DEF I do empty, that applied to my 2018 as well as my 2022. Aside from too cold of an engine/exhaust and coasting you are using DEF all the time.

What you're talking about is more aligned with the DPF and fuel consumption, but that still doesn't deal with the motor being cold. The DPF doesn't catch partially burned fuel, it captures particulate matter which is always present with diesel combustion. When the engine is working hard the DPF is hot enough to clean itself passvly. This can reduce the frequency of active regens, but those will still occur every 24 hours of engine operation regardless of DPF soot load levels.

Well ****, this was drive to Florida from Texas. It was hot. I was towing 68mph in 5th gear and it was hot! So far no issues. 77k on clock. Maybe it was a break-in fluke i hope. I got truck new and that was first maiden voyage.

I only get ~350 mpg on DEF towing, the gauge drops fast.

That's about what I *think* I get.

My data seems a little wonky, but I also run 1/4 to 3/4 and only ever add a 2.5 gal jug as needed. FWIW, the bulk of my (low low) mileage is towing.

NO freaking way! you have boat attached to your camper???? is that even legal? You must have CDL. My fifthwheel has a hitch but i just have a generator on attached to it. damn man

Double tow is legal in Colorado to 70' (some will say 75'). I'm currently 76' and nowhere near the longest.

Most of the east coast isn't allowed and a few western states - WA and OR - don't allow. Most are 5th wheel only, but a little less than half the sates that allow it, also allow it with ball on ball (bumper pull).

98% of the cruisers could care less and have better things to do than stop a healthy looking rig to check regs they're often very unfamiliar with, Many assume DOT is onvoled and that's just not the case except a small handful of states. DOT is commercial and doesn't regulate recreational.

And no, I don't have, nor require, a CDL. Some states require a Class-A (test only) non-commercial CDL.

We actually have a bookface group with over 7K members.

That’s awesome! Yea, great point on healthy looking rig. I’m in Texas. I’ll have to check out what I can tow. I can’t have Colorado outdo Texas! Our motto here is “everything is bigger in Texas” shoot, now I have to go buy a boat. And a cannon to tow behind it! On a side note, check out the bed camper I got. It’s from etrailer. It’s made by company that makes softops for jeeps. Best part is its a convertible. In seconds whole thing folds back and I hook up my fifth wheel. And once I get to camp I put it back up and have all my stuff dry and protected. Best $999 addition to truck!

Sounds like Bestop, up the road a bit towards Boulder and used to be a customer of mine.

BTW, you're parking sucks. :D

Oh yea. I see a curb, rock, bolder I park on it. Notice front wheel too lol. If I can’t find either I find a small tree and park on it. (My previous truck in pic)
