Hello all, was towing a 37ft travel trailer this weekend a total of 1300 miles (1000) with the trailer on. Def gauge never moved tried topping it off near home put in .347 gallons before it came spurting out.

No codes
No hiccups
Ran 62-70 mph
Edge inside had exhaust temps around 1000-1250.
Burned right at 100 gallons of fuel.
Def was being consumed prior to this fill up (never below a 1/4 tank)
Trucks right at 31,000 miles
Fuel filters, Front/rear diffs/ transmission fluid has been changed.
any ideas have owned since 24k.
Been looking through the forums and have mostly seen about over consumption.
Any ideas?

You should have burned about 2.25-2.5 gallons over that many miles. How full was it before you left?

What is modified on the truck? Seeing EGT’s of 1250° isn’t stock tuning or isn’t stock EGT sensors.

But no codes means no real issues on low consumption.

Only mods are an edge insight cs2, afe airbox, and a slightly larger tire/rim package. On a trip to nebraska this spring we burnt around a 1/4 tank of def if memory serves me correct. No tunes on the truck. We filled it up before we left

1250° EGT’s are incredibly hot for a stock truck on any of the stock EGT sensors. Are you sure you saw temps that high?

That has nothing to do with the DEF consumption, just something abnormal I noticed in your data.

It would for a brief moment at times, mainly stay down around the 1k mark. Im leaving tuesday midday for about a 4 hour run north of duluth, mn with the camper and will watch them again. Prolly wont have any real internet connection but will report back on sunday. I will hopefully know more on the def situation by then as well.

Are you monitoring any of the DEF related PID’s on the insight?

That DEF story doesn’t shock me. My new to me 18 has been so much lower than the 19 I had before.

Just did 1200 miles this weekend. Empty, but 37s/3.42s, at 80-85 across UT and ID. Not sure the DEF gauge barely moved much like you.

Gauge sender isn’t known for a lot of accuracy. Filling with nozzles has been very inconsistent for me.

Yeah the 13-18’s use a lot less DEF. I would get ~1000mpg empty and ~500mpg towing with my 18.

Well i feel like an idiot, was going through the cs2 today a found the 5 different hp settings. When i went to look at them it had the timing set at 5. Set it back on the stock setting but still has the 5. Would i set that back to 1 as well? I would assume that would help lower the egt overall. Thoughts?

What exactly do you have on the truck for a programmer? The inisght is the monitor.

Did you add a pyro probe? Or is that 1250° on the stock probe?

The box under under the hood says edge products. I will have to look for the probe. Best place to look and to tell if its aftermarket?

Sounds like an Edge Attitude. I would take the time to learn what you have and how to use it. Level 5 is NOT for towing, level 2 is the tow level.

Level 5 towing could explain those extreme EGT’s, assuming there isn’t a probe in the manifold pre turbo.

How is the EGT labeled on the Insight? EGT1?

I will have to take a look how the egt is labeled when i get back to the yard after work tonight. I will also look for the probe in the manifold and respond back in the morning. I did click the box for the stock "tune" just to start fresh. I appreciate your help again.

I would pull the Edge. Surprised it didn't roast the engine running level 5 towing.:eek::eek::eek:

I know. I’m not a fan of edge tuning.

If there isn’t a manifold probe those EGT’s were hades hot.

I only run the CTS3 because there aren’t any other better options.

This is what ive got on the edge
Post turbo egt
Post dpf egt
Post doc egt
Juice egt (currently on screen)
Looks to be a probe in the exhaust manifold as well

Ok, so if the probe is pre-turbo and that’s what was 1250° then it’s not as bad. The timing and aggressive fueling of level 5 is not a good idea for towing.

Mine does same. I have a 35” fifth wheel that’s roughly 15000lbs. When I took it to Florida and back I nearly used any def. Reason being (I’m told) is that truck under load is burning all the fuel and getting hot enough to keep itself clean. Def is for cold engine and when fuel is not fully burned so it gets in there and heats up and fires up and other fary **** to pass emotions. That said, as long as you are consuming def after working the truck you are good to go.
