My wife and I put 1K down on a 2014 mega cab 6.7. I have a few friends who have Ram's and thankfullly they told me to test the exhaust brake. On our test run, I found that the exhaust brake was hardly working. I put it in standard mode, then auto and I could hardly tell the difference. I have a really good code scanner ( snap on) and it did not run any codes after I drove it for 1/2 hr. The truck ran great other than no exhaust brake. I'm new to Ram trucks and had the truck sent to a 3rd party for a pre-purchase inspection and told them to dig into the exhaust brake. What should I be looking for here? I know the EBS, acutator and turbo can casue the exhaust brake to not work. This truck is really clean other than the EB. 60K miles for 44K with all options including the "convience package". My wife and I put 1K down on the truck we liked it so much. So, what can I expect from the 3rd party inspeciotn and how should I address this problem? I mean, it could be a simple sensor problem, or the acutator or the turbo? I am concerned that the 3rd party will say, heck, I don't know? Most of us gear heads seem to be better at figuring out these problems. I did the 3rd party to CMA. Hoping that it is a simiple problem. What type of cost could be associated with a weak and intermittent exhaust brake? I ran the truck in the standard mode, auto mode and with the truck in towing mode. The EB worked going up hill at 30ph, but did not work going down hill? WTH? I heard the EB working a few times on the flat roads, but most of the time, I head nothing and felt no EB?

Thanks for the help!

What speeds were you attempting to use the EB at? Also the earlier versions were not as aggressive as the newer rams, but you should be able to hear it at least.

I ran the truck up to 70mph, 55 when I was on the freeway. Around town, I was going about 35mph, myabe 45mph. The only time I heard the exhaust brake was when I was going up hill. I ran a code scanner and found 0 codes? My friend has a 2011 and he said his is pretty agressive above 30mph. I hardly heard the EB unless I was going uphill. Thanks for the reply!

Did you try with TH on? The torque converter has to be locked for the EB to work and the non-TH deceleration lock schedule isn’t very aggressive.

Uphill with the brakes applied or just coasting?

TH? Tow haul mode? I did test the truck in TH mode and without TH mode. I tested the EB in TH Mode and without TH MODE. When I was going uphill, I had the truck in the first exhaust brake mode and the EB did come on, but it was not all that noticeable when going uphill at 35mph….in either EB mode. Going uphill, the EB came on when I took my foot off of the throttle and in auto mode when I hit the brakes. Going down the same steep hill, I felt and heard nothing in both modes. I took the truck on the freeway up to 70mph, I heard and felt nothing?

I had the truck inspected by a 3rd party. Everything works with no codes. They did find a bad ujoint on the upper left and the upper hose on the transmission has a small leak. Exhaust brake is working, so I bought it and it is amazing! Now I need to find out how to configure torque pro to the truck. Thank you!
